Western Railway Cancels 102 Mumbai Local Trains on January 21 Due to Kandivali Block
Mumbai: Commuters travelling on Mumbai’s Western Railway suburban network are set to face major inconvenience on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, as 102 local train services will remain cancelled due to operational work at the Kandivali car shed.
Western Railway confirmed that the cancellations are a result of the suspension of entry and exit operations at the Kandivali car shed, which is essential for routine maintenance and safety-related work on the suburban rail system.
Speed Restrictions Between Kandivali and Malad
In addition to train cancellations, speed restrictions will be imposed on both Up and Down fast lines between Kandivali and Malad during the block period. Railway officials said these restrictions are necessary to ensure safety while the maintenance work is carried out.
Because of the reduced speed and limited train movement, several suburban services on the Western line will not operate for the day.
Passengers Advised to Plan Ahead
Western Railway has advised passengers to check the list of cancelled trains in advance and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid last-minute inconvenience. Office-goers and daily commuters are expected to be the most affected by the disruption.
Officials urged passengers to consider alternative travel options such as buses or Metro services where available.
Similar Disruptions on January 20
This is not the first disruption in the week. On January 20, Western Railway had also operated a mega block at Kandivali, which led to the cancellation of several local train services.
An official statement clarified that the block on January 20, like the one on January 21, was part of planned operational and maintenance work aimed at improving long-term efficiency and safety of Mumbai’s suburban rail network.
Routine Maintenance for Long-Term Benefits
Railway authorities emphasised that while such blocks cause short-term inconvenience, they are essential for the smooth functioning of the suburban railway system, which carries millions of passengers daily.
“Operational work like this is necessary to maintain safety standards and improve service reliability,” officials said.
What Commuters Should Do
- Check official Western Railway announcements
- Allow extra travel time
- Avoid peak hours if possible
- Use alternate transport where feasible
With over 100 services affected, commuters are advised to stay updated and plan their travel carefully on January 21.
