Central Railway Refunds Nearly ₹6 Crore to 80,000 Passengers Following Karjat-Lonavala Monsoon Rail Disruption

Heavy Rains and Landslide Trigger Large-Scale Refund Process Across Maharashtra

Passengers affected by the recent monsoon-related railway disruption between Karjat and Lonavala have received significant financial relief from Central Railway. Following a landslide in the ghat section that interrupted train operations on July 6, Central Railway refunded nearly ₹5.91 crore to 79,747 passengers whose journeys were cancelled or disrupted.

The refund drive became one of the largest single-day passenger compensation efforts undertaken by Central Railway during the ongoing monsoon season. Railway officials processed refunds quickly with the support of additional staff, dedicated help desks, and expanded passenger assistance at major stations.

Nearly Double the Refunds Compared With Last Year

According to official railway data, the total refund amount and the number of passengers who received compensation increased significantly compared with the same date in 2025.

On July 6 this year:

  • 79,747 passengers received refunds.
  • ₹5.91 crore was returned to travelers.
  • The refund amount increased by 96% over last year.
  • The number of passengers receiving refunds rose by 106% compared with July 6, 2025.

Officials said the higher numbers reflect both the scale of the disruption and the railway's faster response in handling refund claims.

Mumbai Division Records the Highest Number of Refunds

The Mumbai Division handled the largest share of refund requests after several trains were cancelled, partially terminated, or rescheduled because of the landslide.

Key refund figures include:

Mumbai Division

  • Refund Amount: ₹2.86 crore
  • Passengers Refunded: 37,330

For comparison, the same day last year saw:

  • ₹1.42 crore refunded
  • 17,490 passengers compensated

Pune Division

The Pune Division also experienced a sharp increase in refund requests.

  • Refund Amount: ₹1.56 crore
  • Passengers Refunded: 20,982

During the corresponding period last year:

  • Refund Amount: ₹74.46 lakh
  • Passengers Refunded: 9,689

Railway officials noted that refund processing was completed across all divisions without major delays despite the heavy passenger volume.

Special Help Desks Assisted Thousands of Travelers

To reduce inconvenience, Central Railway activated additional passenger support measures immediately after services were affected.

These included:

  • Extra booking and refund counters
  • Dedicated passenger help desks
  • Additional railway personnel at busy stations
  • Faster refund processing systems
  • Continuous announcements and passenger guidance

Officials said these arrangements helped eligible passengers receive refunds quickly while reducing waiting time at stations.

Landslide Severely Disrupted Railway Operations

The disruption occurred after continuous heavy rainfall triggered a landslide in the Karjat-Lonavala ghat section, one of the busiest and most challenging railway routes during the monsoon.

As a result:

  • Several long-distance trains were cancelled.
  • Many services were short-terminated.
  • Some trains operated on revised schedules.
  • Thousands of passengers were forced to postpone or cancel their journeys.

The incident once again highlighted the challenges railway authorities face every monsoon, particularly in hilly sections that are vulnerable to landslides and falling debris.

Restoration Work Continues in the Affected Ghat Section

Railway engineering teams have continued restoration work on a priority basis to restore normal train operations between Karjat and Lonavala.

Officials are working to ensure track safety before resuming full services. Continuous inspections are also being carried out to monitor slopes and reduce the risk of further disruptions during ongoing heavy rainfall.

Indian Railways has repeatedly emphasized that passenger safety remains its highest priority during the monsoon season, especially in vulnerable sections across the Western Ghats.

Passengers Advised to Check Train Status Before Traveling

Central Railway has urged passengers to verify the latest train schedules before leaving for the station, as weather conditions may continue to affect services.

Travelers are encouraged to:

  • Check live train status before departure.
  • Use official railway enquiry services for updates.
  • Contact railway helplines for travel assistance.
  • Stay informed about service changes during heavy rainfall.

With the monsoon expected to remain active across Maharashtra, railway authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely while working to maintain safe and reliable operations.
