Mumbai Infra Update: Mahalaxmi Cable-Stayed Flyover Takes Shape, BMC Targets October 2026 Completion
Mumbai’s infrastructure push continues to gather pace as the cable-stayed flyover near Mahalaxmi Railway Station steadily moves towards completion. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed that the project is progressing as planned, with over half of the crucial pylon work already completed. The flyover is scheduled to become fully operational by October 31, 2026.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar recently inspected the construction site on Keshavrao Jedhe Marg and reviewed the progress of the bridge work. During the visit, he directed officials to ensure strict adherence to safety norms, quality standards, and timelines so that the project is delivered without delays.
Pylon Work Nears Major Milestone
One of the most striking features of the flyover is its 78.5-metre-tall steel pylon, which will support the cable-stayed structure. Civic officials confirmed that around 55 per cent of the pylon construction has been completed, marking a major milestone in the project.
Bangar emphasised the importance of coordinated planning, stating that the pylon, approach roads, and supporting infrastructure must be completed in sync. He instructed engineers to adopt a well-planned execution strategy to ensure smooth commissioning of the entire flyover within the stipulated deadline.
Public safety remains a top priority, with officials asked to conduct regular technical inspections and maintain high construction quality throughout the project duration.
Two Spans, Complex Coordination
The flyover will consist of two independent spans extending from the central pylon. The western span, measuring 95 metres, is progressing well and is expected to be completed by the end of February 2026.
The eastern span, which will extend 165 metres, presents a more complex challenge as it falls within railway premises. Construction of this section will begin only after receiving the necessary permissions and railway block approvals. Officials stated that work on the eastern span is expected to commence after approvals and is planned to be completed between March 15 and October 15, 2026.
Close coordination with railway authorities will be critical to avoid disruptions and ensure worker safety during construction.
Focus on Timely Completion Despite Monsoon
To prevent delays, the Bridge Department has been instructed to work closely with the local ward office and traffic police. Bangar directed officials to carry out parallel activities wherever possible to save time and reduce inconvenience to commuters.
Special attention is being given to monsoon planning, ensuring that construction continues even during heavy rainfall. All ancillary works, including approach roads and finishing elements, are to be completed alongside the main structure.
Senior officials, including Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Girish Nikam and Executive Engineer (Bridges) Rajesh Mulye, were present during the inspection, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to timely completion.
Once operational, the Mahalaxmi cable-stayed flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic flow across key road and rail corridors in South Mumbai.
