Bellasis Flyover To Open Thursday, Boosting South Mumbai Connectivity
Mumbai is set to receive a major infrastructure upgrade as the Bellasis Flyover connecting Tardeo and Mumbai Central railway station will be inaugurated on Thursday. The much-awaited bridge has been completed a remarkable 15 months ahead of schedule, marking a significant achievement in the city’s ongoing infrastructure push.
The flyover will be inaugurated at 11 am through an online ceremony led by Devendra Fadnavis, along with his deputies Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The event will also be attended by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde.
Following the formal ceremony and removal of barricades and stage arrangements, the flyover will be opened to the public.
15 Months Ahead Of Deadline
The flyover has set a new benchmark in project execution by being completed well before its official deadline. According to civic officials, the construction work was finished last month. However, the inauguration was delayed due to the Chief Minister’s packed schedule and discussions around renaming the structure.
Interestingly, while the bridge has been widely referred to as the Bellasis Flyover, it is currently being described officially as the railway flyover connecting Tardeo–Nagpada and Mumbai Central. There has been no formal mention of the Bellasis name in recent communications.
The project was executed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has been accelerating multiple connectivity and transport initiatives across the city.
Key Features Of The Flyover
The newly constructed flyover stretches a total of 333 metres, making it a significant addition to South Mumbai’s road network. Its structural breakdown includes:
- 138.39 metres on the eastern side
- 157.39 metres on the western side
- 36.90-metre span over railway tracks
- 7-metre-wide carriageway for smooth vehicular movement
- Wide footpaths on both sides for pedestrian safety
The inclusion of wide footpaths ensures that the flyover is not just vehicle-friendly but also pedestrian-friendly — an important factor in densely populated areas like Tardeo and Mumbai Central.
Improved Connectivity For South Mumbai
The new flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in and around Mumbai Central railway station and Tardeo. The area witnesses heavy vehicular movement throughout the day due to railway connectivity, commercial activity, and dense residential presence.
By providing a direct railway overpass, the flyover eliminates bottlenecks caused by railway crossings and signal congestion. Commuters traveling between Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central are likely to experience reduced travel time and smoother traffic flow.
Urban planners believe this project will also benefit emergency services, public transport vehicles, and daily office commuters who frequently pass through this corridor.
A Milestone In Mumbai’s Infrastructure Push
The early completion of the flyover highlights improved coordination between civic authorities and contractors. In a city where infrastructure projects often face delays due to logistical challenges, completing a major bridge 15 months ahead of schedule sends a strong message about administrative efficiency.
With multiple road, metro, and coastal road projects underway, Mumbai is witnessing one of its most aggressive infrastructure expansion phases in recent years. The opening of this flyover adds momentum to that transformation.
As the bridge opens to the public, thousands of daily commuters are expected to benefit immediately from improved mobility and reduced congestion in South Mumbai.
