Mumbai residents witnessed confusion and uncertainty on Wednesday after the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) announced a nationwide chemists’ strike against online medicine platforms and e-pharmacies. The protest triggered concerns among patients about possible medicine shortages and whether pharmacies across Mumbai would remain closed for the day.

However, despite the nationwide bandh call, a complete shutdown of medicine shops across Mumbai appears unlikely. Reports suggest that several state-level pharmacy associations, including those in Maharashtra, have not fully supported the strike, allowing many pharmacies and emergency medicine services to continue operating across the city.

Why Have Chemists Across India Called a Nationwide Strike?

The one-day nationwide strike was called by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) to protest against online sale of medicines and aggressive discounting practices adopted by e-pharmacy companies.

According to the organisation, traditional chemists believe unregulated online medicine sales are negatively impacting neighbourhood medical stores while also creating potential public health risks.

The AIOCD has specifically objected to government notifications GSR 220(E) and GSR 817(E), claiming the rules created loopholes that allowed online medicine delivery platforms to operate without a fully defined regulatory framework.

AIOCD General Secretary Rajiv Singhal reportedly raised concerns regarding the alleged use of fake or incorrect prescriptions on certain online platforms and demanded stricter regulation of e-pharmacies.

Traditional Chemists Raise Concerns Over Deep Discounting

One of the major concerns raised by retail chemists involves the pricing strategies adopted by large online medicine delivery platforms.

According to traditional pharmacy operators, e-pharmacy companies often offer discounts ranging from 20% to 50%, making it increasingly difficult for small independent chemist shops to compete.

Retail chemists argue that such pricing pressure could gradually impact the sustainability of local neighbourhood medical stores, many of which continue serving patients through direct and immediate access to medicines.

The protest also reflects the growing competition between India’s traditional pharmacy network and the rapidly expanding online medicine delivery sector that witnessed major growth during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Will Medicine Shops Remain Closed in Mumbai?

Despite the nationwide strike announcement, most pharmacy services in Mumbai are expected to remain partially operational.

According to reports quoting government sources, pharmacy associations in at least 12 states and Union Territories - including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab and West Bengal - have reportedly not fully backed the bandh.

As a result, several medicine shops in Mumbai are likely to remain open, particularly:

• Hospital-attached pharmacies
• Government hospital medicine counters
• Emergency medical stores
• Several 24x7 pharmacies
• Many Jan Aushadhi Kendras

Larger pharmacy chains and hospital-linked medical stores are expected to continue functioning normally across the city.

However, patients may still experience partial disruptions in some localities where independent neighbourhood chemists or wholesale distributors choose to participate in the strike.

Emergency Medicine Supply Expected to Continue

Officials have indicated that contingency measures are being discussed to ensure uninterrupted supply of critical medicines and emergency drugs during the strike period.

Emergency healthcare services are expected to function normally, with hospital pharmacies and essential medicine counters continuing operations throughout the day.

Patients requiring urgent medicines, chronic disease prescriptions, or emergency healthcare supplies are therefore unlikely to face a complete disruption in Mumbai.

The continued functioning of emergency counters and hospital-linked pharmacies is expected to reduce panic among patients and their families.

The nationwide chemist strike has once again brought attention to the ongoing debate surrounding regulation of India’s rapidly expanding e-pharmacy sector.
