Major Monsoon Readiness Plan Aims to Keep Mumbai’s Lifeline Running Smoothly

As Mumbai prepares for another challenging monsoon season, Western Railway has taken significant steps to keep its suburban train network operating safely and efficiently. The railway has installed 239 Digital Axle Counters (DACs) across its Mumbai suburban routes and waterproofed 1,860 signaling installations to minimize disruptions caused by heavy rainfall and waterlogging.

The initiative is designed to strengthen railway operations during the monsoon, when flooding and excessive moisture often impact signaling systems and lead to train delays.

Digital Technology to Improve Train Movement During Heavy Rain

According to railway officials, the newly installed Digital Axle Counters will help maintain train services even when traditional track circuits are affected by water accumulation.

The system works by electronically counting the wheels of a train as it enters and leaves a section of track. This allows railway signaling systems to accurately determine whether a track is occupied or clear, helping maintain safe and smooth train movement during adverse weather conditions.

Officials believe the technology will significantly improve operational reliability and reduce monsoon-related disruptions across the network.

Thousands of Signaling Installations Protected From Rain Damage

In addition to deploying DACs, Western Railway has taken extensive preventive measures to protect critical railway infrastructure from rain-related failures.

A total of 1,860 signaling installations have been covered with waterproof plastic shields to prevent moisture from damaging sensitive equipment. Waterproof protection has also been added to Automatic Warning System (AWS) magnets and other essential signaling components.

These upgrades are part of Western Railway’s annual monsoon preparedness campaign aimed at ensuring uninterrupted train operations throughout the rainy season.

Comprehensive Safety Checks Conducted Across the Network

Railway teams have carried out detailed inspections of signaling infrastructure ahead of the monsoon. Officials confirmed that earthing systems have been examined, power supply units tested, and cable insulation checks completed to reduce the risk of technical failures.

The inspections are intended to strengthen system reliability and ensure quick response capabilities during periods of severe weather.

Special Focus on Flood-Prone Areas and Track Equipment

Western Railway has also prioritized the maintenance of point machines, which are responsible for controlling track alignments and train routing.

Out of 635 point machines across the division, 471 have been sealed and tested for monsoon readiness. Waterproof point machines have been installed at flood-prone locations, including Vasai Road and Bandra, where heavy rainfall has historically affected railway operations.

Additionally, emergency stocks of signaling equipment have been positioned at key stations to allow for faster repairs if any failures occur during the monsoon season.

Railway Officials Confident of Smoother Operations This Year

Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, said the organization has implemented several preventive measures to minimize inconvenience for passengers during the rainy months.

He highlighted the Digital Axle Counter system as a key component of the railway’s monsoon preparedness strategy, noting that the technology will support safer and more reliable train operations.

Dedicated Teams to Remain on Standby Throughout the Monsoon

Western Railway has confirmed that specialized maintenance teams will remain on standby throughout the monsoon season to respond quickly to faults and carry out emergency repairs whenever required.

With millions of daily commuters relying on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, officials expect these proactive measures to significantly reduce rain-related disruptions and help keep the city’s vital transport system running smoothly during the months ahead.
