MSRTC to Add 5,000 New Lalpari Buses as Maharashtra Accelerates Fleet Modernization

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has completed the tender process to purchase 5,000 new Lalpari buses, marking a major step toward modernizing its fleet and improving public transportation across the state.

Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik said Tata Motors emerged as the lowest bidder in the tender process. The new buses are expected to help MSRTC replace older vehicles, reduce breakdowns and provide more reliable services, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

5,000 New Buses to Strengthen MSRTC Services

MSRTC is currently dealing with a shortage of buses, while many vehicles in its fleet have been operating for 12 to 14 years. More than 5,000 buses are expected to reach the end of their service life and become due for retirement or scrapping within the next six months.

The addition of 5,000 new Lalpari buses is expected to ease pressure on the existing fleet. It could also help reduce route cancellations and improve bus availability for passengers who depend on state transport for their daily travel.

Sarnaik said the quality of the new buses would remain a priority during the procurement process. The focus will be on adding reliable vehicles that can support MSRTC's growing operational needs.

MSRTC Already Adding New Buses

The state transport corporation has already started expanding and upgrading its fleet. Around 2,640 new buses with 2x2 seating have been added, while the process of introducing 3,000 Rajmata Jijau buses with 3x2 seating is also underway.

The additional buses are expected to help address several passenger concerns. These include canceled school trips, limited bus availability and a shortage of overnight services on rural routes.

For students, farmers, workers, women, senior citizens and other regular passengers, better bus availability could make daily travel more convenient and dependable.

Focus on Bus Services Based on Passenger Demand

MSRTC is also planning to introduce a more demand-based approach to bus operations. Under the proposed Bus on Demand model, services could be provided on routes where there is sufficient passenger demand.

The initiative is aimed at making better use of MSRTC's resources while responding to the travel needs of different communities. Sarnaik has also urged people requesting new or additional routes to ensure that the services have enough passenger demand to remain financially sustainable.

Fleet Modernization to Support Rural Maharashtra

The new bus procurement is particularly important for rural Maharashtra, where ST buses remain a key mode of public transportation. In many areas, passengers have limited alternatives when services are reduced or routes are canceled.

Replacing older buses with new vehicles could help MSRTC improve operational reliability and provide more consistent services across rural and semi-urban routes.

The corporation is also looking beyond conventional diesel buses. After strengthening the immediate fleet requirement, MSRTC plans to accelerate its transition toward more environment-friendly electric buses.

The procurement of 5,000 new Lalpari buses therefore represents an important step in MSRTC's wider fleet modernization effort. Faster induction of these buses could help the corporation manage upcoming retirements while improving service availability for millions of passengers across Maharashtra.
