MHADA Redevelopment Gains Momentum Across Mumbai With Major Progress in Kamathipura and BDD Chawls

Mumbai’s redevelopment landscape is seeing steady progress as the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) moves forward with several major projects aimed at providing safer homes, better living conditions and modern rehabilitation housing for residents.

Under the leadership of MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal IAS, recent redevelopment activities have included important steps in Kamathipura, Worli BDD Chawl and Naigaon BDD Chawl. These projects combine large-scale redevelopment with a focus on rehabilitation and the needs of existing residents.

Kamathipura Cluster Redevelopment Moves Into Implementation Phase

The historic Kamathipura Cluster Redevelopment Project has reached an important stage in September 2026. MHADA signed a Collaboration and Development Agreement (C&DA) on September 17, providing fresh momentum to the implementation of the project.

Before the agreement was signed, MHADA also organized a presentation of the proposed redevelopment plan and a public interaction program. The process gave residents and stakeholders an opportunity to understand the proposed plan and share their views.

The development is significant for one of Mumbai’s historic neighborhoods, where redevelopment can help create modern housing while addressing the needs of existing residents. MHADA’s approach is focused on moving the project forward while keeping rehabilitation and public participation at the center of the process.

Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Brings New Homes to Residents

The Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project has also recorded major progress in 2026. MHADA announced that 827 rehabilitation flats would be handed over to eligible residents beginning May 21.

The handover process started with 36 eligible residents receiving possession of their flats on the first day, while 41 additional residents received allotment letters.

The project continued to move ahead in September, when MHADA began the distribution of 574 rehabilitation flats in Wings B and C of Rehabilitation Building No. 1 at Sumer Kendra, Worli. This represents another important step toward providing eligible BDD Chawl residents with new rehabilitation homes.

The redevelopment is part of MHADA’s broader effort to replace old chawl structures with modern housing while ensuring that eligible residents receive permanent rehabilitation accommodation.

Naigaon BDD Chawl Redevelopment Delivers 537 Rehabilitation Homes

The Naigaon BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project has also moved into a key delivery stage. MHADA announced in June that 537 rehabilitation tenements would be handed over to eligible residents starting June 5.

The handover of these homes marks an important milestone because redevelopment is ultimately measured by how effectively new housing reaches the families who are eligible to benefit from it.

The project reflects MHADA’s continuing focus on completing rehabilitation work and helping residents transition from older housing conditions into new residential buildings.

MHADA Focuses on Rehabilitation Along With Redevelopment
