Don't Sell Your New Homes, Protect Them Like Gold, CM Devendra Fadnavis Appeals to Residents

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made an emotional appeal to residents receiving new homes under the N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl redevelopment project, urging them to protect their homes and pass them on to future generations. He also directed the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to complete the rehabilitation of all eligible BDD Chawl residents by 2030.

The Chief Minister made these remarks during a key handover ceremony for 557 families receiving new 500-square-foot homes in three rehabilitated buildings under the N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl redevelopment project in Mumbai.

The keys were symbolically handed over on Friday at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre by CM Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar.

557 N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl Families Receive 500 Sq Ft Homes

For generations, families living in the historic BDD Chawls have faced space limitations, with many residing in homes measuring just 160 square feet. The redevelopment program aims to provide these families with larger, modern homes and a better quality of life.

Expressing happiness over the progress, Fadnavis said the government had long dreamed of providing 500-square-foot homes in high-rise buildings to BDD Chawl residents. He noted that this vision was gradually becoming a reality, with families in Worli and Naigaon already benefiting from the redevelopment initiative.

Now, 557 families from N. M. Joshi Marg are also receiving their new homes, marking another important step in Mumbai's urban housing development.

The Chief Minister encouraged beneficiaries not to sell their newly allotted homes. He urged them to consider the properties a valuable family asset, protect them like gold, and preserve them as an inheritance for future generations.

MHADA Directed to Complete All BDD Chawl Rehabilitation by 2030

During the ceremony, Fadnavis instructed MHADA to ensure that the rehabilitation of all eligible BDD Chawl residents is completed by 2030.

The state government assigned the redevelopment responsibility to MHADA's Mumbai Board to move forward with projects that had remained delayed for several years. The redevelopment covers the historic BDD Chawls at N. M. Joshi Marg, Naigaon, and Worli, excluding Sewri.

Through this major housing initiative, approximately 15,593 residents are expected to receive new homes.

The Chief Minister explained that earlier efforts to begin redevelopment through private developers had not produced the expected results. The government therefore decided to appoint MHADA as the implementing agency to ensure that the long-pending projects could move forward.

He also highlighted the historical importance of BDD Chawls, which have witnessed several major social, cultural, and political developments in Mumbai. The government aims to ensure that redevelopment provides residents with larger homes and essential facilities while improving their overall living conditions.

MHADA Confirms Possession of 3,933 Rehabilitation Homes

Providing details about the project's progress, MHADA Vice Chairman and CEO IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal said that possession of 3,933 rehabilitation homes had been handed over to eligible residents so far.

He explained that construction of the rehabilitation buildings under the first phase is progressing, while work on the second phase is expected to begin soon. As buildings are completed, eligible families are receiving possession of their new homes.

Jaiswal also shared the expected completion timelines for the three major redevelopment locations:

  • N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl: The project is expected to be completed by December 2029.
  • Naigaon BDD Chawl: Completion is targeted for December 2029.
  • Worli BDD Chawl: The project is expected to be completed by June 2030.

These timelines reflect the ongoing efforts to complete the large-scale rehabilitation program and provide eligible families with permanent housing.

BDD Chawl Redevelopment Marks a New Chapter for Mumbai Residents

The N. M. Joshi Marg BDD Chawl redevelopment is an important milestone in Mumbai's housing transformation. The distribution of 557 new homes brings long-awaited relief to families who have lived in small residential units for generations.

With MHADA overseeing redevelopment at N. M. Joshi Marg, Naigaon, and Worli, the state government is working toward providing better housing facilities and a more secure future for thousands of residents.

The latest handover also represents a significant step toward fulfilling the government's commitment to modernize Mumbai's historic BDD Chawls while ensuring that long-standing residents receive the larger homes they deserve.
