Tesla to Launch First Charging Station in Mumbai Next Week with Fast and Affordable EV Options

Mumbai, July 29 – In a significant step toward accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, US-based EV giant Tesla has announced the opening of its first-ever charging station in the country. The station, strategically located in Mumbai, will be operational starting next week and will feature both DC and AC charging options.

This launch follows Tesla's entry into the Indian market last month, marked by the Model Y debut and the opening of its first Experience Centre at Maker Maxity Commercial Complex in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai.

Two Types of Chargers, Dual Speeds

The Mumbai charging station will be equipped with eight stalls in total—four V4 Superchargers for direct current (DC) fast charging and four destination chargers offering alternating current (AC) support.

The V4 Superchargers will offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW, priced at ₹24 per kWh. These ultra-fast chargers are designed to cater to Tesla owners looking to top up their battery quickly during short stops.

On the other hand, the destination chargers will provide charging at 11 kW, aimed at those who plan to stay longer at the location. The cost for AC charging has been set at a more affordable ₹14 per kWh.

This dual-charging model will ensure flexibility and convenience for Tesla users with different energy needs and travel plans.

First of Many: A National Network in the Making

Tesla emphasized that this Mumbai station is the first of eight Supercharging sites announced during its India launch. More stations are in the pipeline across major Indian cities and highways, as part of Tesla's broader goal to enable seamless cross-country travel for its customers.

“This is just the beginning. We are focused on expanding India’s EV infrastructure, and the Mumbai station is our first real-world commitment to that vision,” a company spokesperson said.

While Tesla has remained tight-lipped about the exact locations of the upcoming charging stations, sources suggest that key metros including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are being considered for the next phase of rollout.

Tesla’s Indian Debut: Model Y and BKC Hub

Tesla officially entered the Indian market in July 2025 with the launch of its Model Y SUV, priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The vehicle has garnered significant interest among premium EV buyers due to its range, technology, and safety features.

To support the launch, Tesla also opened its first Experience Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex, one of Mumbai’s prime business hubs. This facility not only showcases Tesla’s product line but also offers on-site charging, test drives, and customer support services.

The BKC facility includes both Supercharging and Destination Charging options, allowing customers to experience the real-world functionality of Tesla’s infrastructure even before making a purchase decision.

Blazing Fast Charging for Real-World Commutes

According to Tesla, the Model Y can gain up to 267 kilometres of range in just 15 minutes when connected to a Supercharger. To put that into perspective, that’s sufficient for five round trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Gateway of India—two of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks.

This speed and efficiency aim to remove the “range anxiety” commonly associated with electric vehicles, encouraging more consumers to shift from traditional fuel vehicles to EVs.

Home Charging Bonus

Tesla is also offering a free wall connector with every new Model Y purchase. This home charger will be installed at the buyer’s residence at no additional cost, allowing for convenient overnight charging.

This initiative is expected to give Tesla an edge in the Indian EV market, where home infrastructure readiness remains a major challenge.

Looking Ahead

Industry experts believe Tesla’s official rollout of its charging network marks a milestone moment for India’s EV ecosystem. With premium infrastructure, high-speed charging, and strategic urban planning, the company is setting new standards in the Indian automobile sector.

While regulatory hurdles and pricing challenges still remain, Tesla’s active presence and investment in infrastructure are expected to accelerate EV adoption in a market traditionally dominated by internal combustion engines.

As India pushes toward a greener future, Tesla’s growing footprint may just be the spark the country needs to power up its electric dreams.
