Navi Mumbai International Airport Crosses 1 Lakh Passenger Mark Within 19 Days of Operations

Mumbai:
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has recorded a strong start to its commercial journey, crossing the one lakh passenger footfall milestone within just 19 days of commencing operations on December 25. The early numbers underline the airport’s growing role in strengthening Mumbai’s aviation ecosystem.

Strong passenger traffic in early phase

As of January 12, NMIA handled a total of 1.09 lakh passengers, with 55,934 arrivals and 53,983 departures. The airport’s busiest day so far was January 10, when it managed 7,345 passengers in a single day, reflecting robust demand and smooth operational handling.

Aviation officials noted that the steady rise in daily passenger traffic indicates increasing confidence among airlines and travellers in the new airport’s infrastructure and efficiency.

Flight movements and baggage handling

During the first 19 days of operations, NMIA recorded 734 air traffic movements (ATMs), including 32 general aviation flights. The airport also demonstrated strong baggage-handling capabilities, processing 40,260 arriving bags and 38,774 departing bags without disruption.

Key domestic routes such as Delhi, Goa, and Bengaluru emerged as the most frequented sectors, highlighting NMIA’s growing connectivity with major Indian cities.

Cargo operations gain momentum

Alongside passenger services, NMIA has also commenced cargo operations, handling 22.21 tonnes of cargo during the initial operational period. Airport authorities said the early integration of cargo services is part of a broader strategy to position NMIA as a comprehensive aviation and logistics hub.

Focus on infrastructure and efficiency

An airport spokesperson stated that NMIA is scaling up operations in a calibrated manner while maintaining high standards of safety and service quality.
“With modern infrastructure, streamlined processes, and a focus on operational efficiency, NMIA continues to expand its services while ensuring a seamless passenger experience,” the spokesperson said.

International operations planned

While the airport is currently handling domestic passenger flights, international passenger operations are expected to begin after February 2026, marking the next phase of NMIA’s operational expansion.

With strong early passenger numbers, efficient handling of flights and baggage, and the commencement of cargo services, NMIA’s initial performance signals its potential to significantly decongest Mumbai’s existing airport and support long-term aviation growth in the region.
