Mysterious Circular Whirlpool Spotted Off Vasai Coast; Fishermen Fear Seismic Activity
A mysterious circular ring-like formation observed in the Arabian Sea, around 66 nautical miles off the Vasai coast, has sparked concern and fear among local fishermen over the past ten days. The unusual marine phenomenon was first noticed by fishermen while returning to shore after their routine fishing expeditions.
According to fishermen, the formation appears like a large circular whirlpool or rotating ring in the sea, unlike normal waves or tides. The repeated sightings have created panic within the fishing community, especially due to Palghar district’s known seismic sensitivity.
Fishing Boat Briefly Trapped, Escapes Safely
In one alarming incident, a fishing boat from Vasai reportedly got caught within the circular formation. Crew members described the water movement as unusual and difficult to control. Fortunately, the boat managed to escape without damage, and no injuries or casualties were reported.
However, the incident has left fishermen shaken, with many now hesitant to venture deep into the sea.
Fear of Underwater Volcanic or Seismic Activity
Local fishermen suspect that the phenomenon may be linked to underwater volcanic activity or seismic disturbances. Palghar district falls under a seismically active zone, recording more than 200 minor earthquakes every year, making such fears more serious.
Although there is no official confirmation yet, the combination of unusual sea patterns and the region’s geological history has heightened anxiety among coastal communities.
Marine Expert Calls for Immediate Investigation
Marine life rescuer Janardan Meher has urged the District Disaster Management Cell and other concerned authorities to immediately investigate the occurrence. He emphasized that ignoring such unusual natural signs could be risky, especially in a sensitive coastal and seismic region like Palghar.
Experts believe that a technical and scientific inspection is necessary to determine whether the formation is caused by underwater currents, geological activity, gas release from the seabed, or any other natural process.
Authorities Yet to Issue Official Statement
As of now, there has been no official explanation from government agencies or scientific institutions regarding the cause of the circular ring. Fishermen have requested authorities to deploy survey vessels or satellite monitoring to assess the situation.
Local disaster management officials are expected to take note of the concerns and may initiate a preliminary assessment if the sightings continue.
Impact on Livelihood and Safety
Fishing is the primary source of income for many families along the Vasai and Palghar coastline. Fear of venturing into deep waters could directly impact livelihoods, especially if the phenomenon remains unexplained.
Several fishermen said they would prefer to avoid the affected area until authorities confirm it is safe. Some have also demanded early warning systems and regular updates to prevent accidents at sea.
Need for Scientific Clarity
Experts caution against jumping to conclusions but agree that the phenomenon deserves serious attention. Natural sea formations can sometimes be caused by strong underwater currents, pressure differences, or temperature variations, but only scientific analysis can provide accurate answers.
Until then, local fishermen remain alert, hoping for quick action and clear communication from authorities.
