Mumbai To Witness Mega Infra Boost On April 7 With Metro Lines 9 & 2B Launch, Thane–Borivali Tunnel Work & Pod Taxi Project

Mumbai: The city is set to mark a major milestone in its infrastructure journey on April 7, with the launch and initiation of four key transport projects aimed at improving connectivity and easing congestion across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The developments include the inauguration of Phase 1 of Metro Lines 9 and 2B, the groundbreaking of the Thane–Borivali tunnel project, and the virtual launch of a pod taxi system in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

High-Level Presence At Launch Events

The events will be attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The launches will take place in a phased manner across multiple locations throughout the day.

Metro Line 9 To Improve Mira-Bhayander Connectivity

The first event is scheduled at 10:00 am at Dahisar (East) Metro Station, where Phase 1 of Metro Line 9 will be inaugurated.

The 4.97-km stretch connecting Dahisar to Kashigaon is expected to significantly benefit commuters in the Mira-Bhayander region, which currently relies heavily on road transport. The metro line is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion and provide a faster, more reliable commuting option.

Thane–Borivali Tunnel Work To Begin

At 11:30 am, the focus will shift to Thane’s Manpada area, where the launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will officially mark the beginning of work on the ambitious Thane–Borivali tunnel project.

Once completed, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time between Thane’s Godbunder Road and Borivali from the current 60–90 minutes to just around 15 minutes, offering a major relief to daily commuters.

Metro Line 2B To Enhance Eastern Connectivity

The third event will take place at 12:30 pm at Diamond Garden in Chembur, where Phase 1 of Metro Line 2B will be inaugurated.

This 5.4-km stretch between Diamond Garden and Mandale in Mankhurd includes five stations—Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale. The corridor is expected to strengthen east-west connectivity and improve last-mile access in the eastern suburbs.

Pod Taxi Project To Ease BKC Traffic

Alongside the Metro Line 2B event, the virtual bhoomipujan of the pod taxi project at Bandra Kurla Complex will also be conducted.

The pod taxi system aims to introduce a driverless, automated transit solution within BKC—one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial hubs—to reduce internal congestion and improve mobility within the district.

A Step Towards Future-Ready Mobility

These projects collectively reflect Mumbai’s push towards building a modern, integrated, and efficient urban transport system. With increasing population pressure and rising vehicular density, such infrastructure upgrades are crucial to sustaining the city’s growth.

The April 7 launches are expected to not only enhance connectivity but also improve commute times, reduce congestion, and support economic activity across the region.
