MMRDA Action Sparks Panic In Kasheli, Bhiwandi; MP Sanjay Kelkar Seeks Crackdown On Builders, Relief For Homebuyers
Mumbai: Thousands of residents in Kasheli along the Bhiwandi–Thane Road are facing growing uncertainty after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiated action against several buildings allegedly constructed using forged approvals.
The development has triggered widespread panic among homebuyers, many of whom now fear eviction despite having purchased flats in good faith.
Illegal Construction Allegations Rock Kasheli
Kasheli, located near Thane, has witnessed rapid urban growth over the past few years due to its strategic location within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). During this expansion, several residential projects were reportedly developed using fake approvals and forged documentation linked to MMRDA.
These properties were primarily sold to middle-income and economically weaker sections, offering relatively affordable housing options compared to central Mumbai locations.
However, recent scrutiny by authorities has flagged multiple structures as illegal, leading to the issuance of notices to residents.
Residents Face Eviction Fears
The action has placed thousands of families in a difficult position, as they now face potential legal consequences and the risk of losing their homes.
Many residents claim they were unaware of any irregularities at the time of purchase and had relied on documents provided by developers.
The situation has intensified due to developers allegedly refusing to provide No Objection Certificates (NOCs), further complicating the legal status of these buildings.
MP Sanjay Kelkar Demands Action Against Developers
Taking serious note of the issue, BJP MP Sanjay Kelkar has stepped in, urging MMRDA officials to take strict action against the developers responsible for the alleged fraud.
He emphasized that innocent homebuyers should not be penalized for violations committed by builders.
Kelkar raised the issue during the ‘Jansevakacha Jansamvad’ programme held in Thane, where affected residents shared their concerns and sought immediate intervention.
Call For Accountability And Buyer Protection
Kelkar has called for a clear distinction between guilty developers and innocent buyers, stressing the need for criminal proceedings against those who forged documents and misled citizens.
He also highlighted the importance of providing relief measures for residents who have invested their life savings into these properties.
Sources suggest that some developers may have even secured bank loans using forged approvals, pointing towards a larger network of financial and regulatory violations.
Growing Concerns Over Regulatory Lapses
The Kasheli case has brought renewed focus on regulatory oversight within the rapidly expanding real estate sector of the MMR region.
Experts believe that stronger verification mechanisms and stricter enforcement are essential to prevent such incidents in the future.
The situation continues to evolve as authorities assess the extent of violations and possible legal remedies for affected residents.
A Housing Crisis In The Making
With eviction fears looming and legal complexities mounting, the crisis in Kasheli highlights the risks associated with unverified real estate transactions in fast-growing urban pockets.
As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on ensuring justice for homebuyers while holding errant developers accountable.
