Mumbai News: Devendra Fadnavis Launches India’s First Pod Taxi Project To Boost BKC Connectivity
Mumbai: In a major push towards futuristic urban mobility, Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for Mumbai’s much-anticipated pod taxi project, aimed at enhancing last-mile connectivity to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
The Automated Rapid Transit System will connect Kurla with BKC, offering a faster and more efficient travel option for daily commuters heading to one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial hubs.
Project Details And Route Plan
The project is being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and will span a total of 8.85 kilometres, developed in multiple phases.
- Phase 1: 3.36 km stretch between Bandra East and Kurla
- Key locations covered: LBS Marg, Kalanagar, and BKC
- Connectivity to suburban railway stations at Bandra and Kurla
This integration is expected to significantly improve access for commuters travelling from different parts of the city.
Driverless Pods To Power The System
The pod taxi system will feature driverless, battery-operated pods running on an elevated track.
Key features include:
- Capacity: Up to 6 passengers per pod
- Speed: Up to 40 km/h
- Frequency: One pod every 15 seconds
The system will include 22 air-conditioned stations, spaced approximately every 200 metres, allowing passengers to board and alight conveniently.
Unlike traditional systems, pods will stop only at selected stations based on demand, ensuring faster and more efficient travel.
Seamless Integration With Metro Network
A key highlight of the project is its integration with Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
The system will connect with:
- Metro Line 3 at BKC
- Metro Line 2B at key points
This will create a seamless multi-modal transport ecosystem, making daily commuting smoother and more efficient.
Infrastructure And Operations
A dedicated depot will be constructed on land provided by the Railway Land Development Authority in Bandra East to support operations and maintenance.
The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, ensuring:
- No direct financial burden on the state government
- Revenue generation through operations
- Reducing Congestion And Promoting Sustainability
Officials believe the pod taxi system will play a crucial role in:
- Reducing traffic congestion in and around BKC
- Cutting travel time for daily commuters
- Promoting eco-friendly, battery-powered transport
By 2031, the system is expected to serve over 1.09 lakh passengers daily, making it a key addition to Mumbai’s transport infrastructure.
A Step Towards Smart Urban Mobility
The project marks a significant step in Mumbai’s transition towards smart and sustainable transport solutions.
With increasing pressure on road networks and public transport, innovative systems like pod taxis are expected to redefine last-mile connectivity in urban India.
