Mumbai Suburban Rail Network May Get Major Expansion Under Proposed MUTP-IV Plan

MRVC Begins Long-Term Study to Strengthen Mumbai Rail Connectivity Through 2047

Mumbai’s suburban railway network could receive a major boost under the proposed fourth phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project, known as MUTP-IV. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) has started a technical assistance study to identify the rail infrastructure needed to meet Mumbai’s growing transportation needs through 2047.

The study will examine new suburban rail corridors, additional tracks, station upgrades, safety improvements and measures to increase passenger capacity. It will also consider the changing travel needs of growing areas across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

MRVC To Assess Future Rail Demand Through 2047

As Mumbai and nearby urban centers continue to expand, the demand for suburban rail services is expected to increase. MRVC’s study will assess passenger demand for 2030, 2035, 2040 and 2047.

The exercise will look at possible extensions of existing railway corridors, new rail lines and additional tracks that could help separate suburban services from mainline traffic. This could allow trains to operate more efficiently and support improved fast and slow suburban services.

The study will also assess the feasibility of extending platforms to accommodate 15-car trains and creating new terminals at locations where passenger demand is expected to be high.

Planning will take into account the Updated Comprehensive Transport Study (CTS) 2021, along with transport projects that are already under construction, approved or being proposed across the MMR.

NAINA And Mumbai 3.0 To Get Special Attention

Future urban growth areas will be an important part of the MUTP-IV planning process. The study will assess the transportation requirements of the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) and Mumbai 3.0, also known as the Karnala-Sai-Chirner (KSC) New Town.

MRVC will examine how these emerging areas could be connected to the suburban railway network. The goal is to plan rail infrastructure that can support future population growth and improve access to new residential, commercial and employment centers.

More AC Trains And Advanced Railway Technology Planned

The proposed expansion will also focus on improving the quality and capacity of existing suburban services. The study will examine the introduction of more AC EMUs, stronger power supply systems, additional stabling lines and better facilities for EMU maintenance.

Modern railway technologies will also be considered. These include Kavach 5.0 and improved signaling systems, along with CBTC technology for the wider suburban network.

These upgrades are aimed at supporting more reliable services while allowing the railway system to handle increasing passenger numbers.

Safety To Remain A Major Priority

Passenger safety will be another key focus of the study, with MRVC aiming to move toward its "Mission Zero Death" objective.

Consultants will review passenger death and injury data and examine major safety concerns such as trespassing, unauthorized access to railway tracks and passenger movement around railway areas.

The study will also explore access-control measures that could improve safety at stations and reduce the risk of accidents.

Around 40 Suburban Stations May See Upgrades

Station modernization will form another important part of the proposed MUTP-IV plan. Around 40 remaining suburban stations will be assessed for possible improvements.

Potential upgrades could include wider platforms, additional foot overbridges and decks, escalators, elevators, improved entry and exit points and better circulating areas around stations.

The study will also examine ways to improve connections between railway stations and other forms of public transportation, making daily journeys more convenient for commuters.

Proposals To Be Shortlisted Before Detailed Project Reports

MRVC will initially prepare a broad list of possible projects along with indicative costs and implementation requirements.

These proposals will then be presented to MRVC, the Zonal Railways and the state government for review and prioritization. Projects selected for further development will move to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage.

The DPRs will provide detailed cost estimates and examine the financial and economic feasibility of the selected projects.

MRVC Focuses On A Safer, Higher-Capacity Rail Network

MRVC Chairman and Managing Director Vilas Sopan Wadekar said the corporation is working toward a safer, higher-capacity and commuter-focused suburban railway system.

The proposed planning includes additional corridors, more AC train rakes, upgrades at remaining stations, stronger trespass-control measures and advanced signaling and train protection systems across the network.

The study will also consider the future mobility needs of NAINA and Mumbai 3.0, helping Mumbai’s suburban railway system prepare for the city region’s long-term growth through 2047.
