Mumbai Metro One Starts Short-Loop Trains Between Ghatkopar And Andheri To Cut Peak-Hour Waiting Times

New Mixed-Loop Metro Service Begins August 10

Mumbai Metro One has introduced a new train operating plan on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor from Monday, August 10, to improve service during busy evening hours. The new system combines short-loop trains between Ghatkopar and Andheri with regular trains running across the full Ghatkopar-Versova route.

The move is designed to increase train frequency, reduce waiting times and provide additional carrying capacity on the busy Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch.

Ghatkopar-Andheri Metro Trains To Run Every 3 Minutes

Under the new mixed-loop system, trains will alternate between the Ghatkopar-Andheri short route and the existing Ghatkopar-Versova service during the evening peak period.

The train gap between Andheri and Ghatkopar will be reduced from 3 minutes and 20 seconds to just 3 minutes. Mumbai Metro One expects the shorter headway to increase carrying capacity on the section by more than 20 percent.

The operator estimates that the change will create capacity for around 28,000 additional commuters. More than 85 percent of Mumbai Metro One passengers traveling between Ghatkopar and Andheri are expected to benefit from the revised schedule.

More Weekday Metro Services Added

The revised operating plan will also increase the number of weekday services on the corridor. Total daily weekday trips will rise from 476 to 484.

During peak hours, the headway between Versova and Azad Nagar will be 362 seconds. The short-loop trains will operate specifically during the evening rush period to address higher passenger demand.

The first Ghatkopar-Andheri short-loop train will leave Andheri Down Platform at 6:23 p.m. The last short-loop service is scheduled to depart at 8:23 p.m.

Mumbai Metro One Focuses On Better Peak-Hour Capacity

The new operating pattern allows Mumbai Metro One to use its existing infrastructure more efficiently instead of relying only on additional infrastructure expansion.

Shyamantak Choudhury, CEO of Mumbai Metro One, said the mixed-loop operation is part of an effort to make maximum use of the current metro system while improving the commuter experience.

The revised arrangement is expected to offer more frequent trains, shorter waiting periods and better capacity on one of the busiest parts of the Mumbai Metro One network.

The Andheri-Ghatkopar section handles a large number of passengers every day, particularly during evening peak hours. By adding short-loop services to this section, Mumbai Metro One aims to match train availability more closely with passenger demand.

The new schedule is expected to make evening travel more convenient for thousands of commuters while improving the overall efficiency of the metro corridor.

With more frequent trains and additional passenger capacity, the mixed-loop system marks a practical step toward improving Mumbai's public transportation network using existing resources.
