MHADA On High Alert Before Monsoon! IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal Inspects Dangerous Buildings Across Mumbai
With the monsoon season approaching, Mumbai’s administration has gone into full alert mode over the growing risk posed by old and dangerous buildings across the city. In a major pre-monsoon safety drive, MHADA Vice Chairman and CEO IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal personally inspected several dilapidated and high-risk structures in Mumbai and directed officials to take immediate preventive action to avoid any loss of life during heavy rains.
Dangerous Buildings Inspected Across Dadar, Prabhadevi, Nagpada & Girgaon
The inspections were carried out as part of the ongoing pre-monsoon survey being conducted by MHADA’s Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board for old cessed and dangerous buildings across the city.
During the inspection drive, IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal visited six highly dangerous buildings located in Dadar West, Prabhadevi, Nagpada and Girgaon. He first inspected Ilam Mahal on S.K. Bole Road in Dadar West and the Goregaonkar Wadi building near Portuguese Church Road, where the condition of the structures was found to be extremely poor.
Following the inspection, officials were instructed to immediately shift residents living inside these buildings to safer locations to prevent any possible tragedy during the monsoon season.
Preventing Casualties Is Top Priority,’ Says IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal
Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal stated that preventing casualties during the rainy season is the administration’s top priority. He appealed to citizens to cooperate with authorities and vacate dangerous buildings immediately for their own safety.
He emphasized that several structures have become extremely unsafe and continuing to stay inside such buildings directly puts lives at risk. According to officials, MHADA is now taking proactive measures to avoid building collapse incidents that frequently occur during Mumbai’s monsoon every year.
Residents Asked To Vacate Unsafe Buildings In Prabhadevi
The inspection team later visited Prabhadevi, where Daya Veera Building and Veera Building located on Jagannath Bhatankar Marg were also found to be in critical condition. Residents and tenants living there were requested to vacate the premises at the earliest.
MHADA officials assured occupants that rent compensation and rehabilitation support would be provided as per rules. Authorities also stated that demolition work would begin immediately after the buildings are vacated.
Cluster Redevelopment Push Before Monsoon
Dangerous structures located on Maulana Azad Road in Nagpada and Mama Parmanand Marg in Girgaon were also inspected during the drive. Officials were directed to speed up evacuation procedures and ensure timely action before heavy rainfall intensifies across Mumbai.
During the visit, some buildings connected to the Kamathipura redevelopment project were also reviewed. Officials were instructed to hold joint meetings with property owners and surrounding cessed building stakeholders to accelerate cluster redevelopment proposals under DCR 33(7) and 33(9).
MHADA Adopts Aggressive Pre-Monsoon Safety Strategy
Mumbai witnesses multiple incidents involving dangerous buildings every monsoon season, with several accidents in past years leading to injuries and fatalities. This year, MHADA has adopted a far more aggressive and preventive approach before the arrival of heavy rains.
Officials said the objective of the campaign is clear - take timely action, prevent disasters and ensure maximum safety for Mumbai residents living in ageing and structurally weak buildings.
