OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Agent to Automate Presentations, Spreadsheets & More

San Francisco: In a significant stride toward automating workplace productivity, OpenAI has announced its new ChatGPT Agent—a task-performing AI bot designed to handle everything from creating PowerPoint presentations and spreadsheets to conducting deep web research and online bookings.

The new ChatGPT Agent operates autonomously, simulating human-like interactions online such as scrolling, typing, and clicking—thanks to OpenAI’s newly designed AI model tailored specifically for agent-based tasks. The tool is being rolled out starting Thursday to Pro, Plus, and Team users, with Enterprise and Education users gaining access later this summer.

A Powerful Blend of Operator and Deep Research

While OpenAI previously introduced tools like Operator, the new ChatGPT Agent merges that browser-based functionality with its "Deep Research" capabilities—allowing it to synthesize complex data from multiple online sources and deliver consolidated, actionable insights.

“This agent is essentially a blend of our browsing bot and our research bot,” said OpenAI in a product statement. “It can not only perform actions on the web but also process vast amounts of data to generate real-world solutions.”

Transforming How Businesses Work

From automating financial reports to prepping client briefings, the use cases for ChatGPT Agent are vast and business-focused. Users can now ask the bot to:

  • Analyze competitors and generate a presentation
  • Scan a user’s calendar and provide context-specific meeting briefs
  • Perform basic financial modeling and spreadsheet creation
  • Book appointments or make online purchases

“We believe this tool can handle first- and second-year analyst-level work—especially when professionals are under time pressure,” said Neel Ajjarapu, product manager at OpenAI.

The ability to generate rough drafts of presentations and detailed Excel-style sheets in minutes could save teams hours of manual effort. These outputs can then be fine-tuned using traditional office software like Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.

A Growing Market for AI Agents

OpenAI’s move follows a broader industry trend of integrating AI agents into everyday workflows. Major enterprise software players such as Microsoft, Salesforce, and Workday have already launched AI agents capable of streamlining tasks like report generation, candidate outreach, and customer engagement.

These autonomous AI bots—often referred to as “agents”—are reshaping productivity by performing user-defined actions instead of just offering conversational responses. However, full-scale adoption still faces hurdles, especially when it comes to integration across diverse platforms and tools.

Is OpenAI Entering Microsoft’s Turf?

The announcement comes amid a growing competitive tension between OpenAI and its primary backer, Microsoft. Microsoft already offers similar capabilities via its AI Copilot tools in Office 365, designed to assist users with Excel formulas, presentation slides, and Word documents.

Although OpenAI emphasized that ChatGPT Agent doesn’t currently support Google Sheets or Slides, it still positions itself closer to Microsoft’s core software services. “This isn’t about competing,” said Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer. “People just naturally use spreadsheets and slides to communicate ideas, so our AI needs to understand and support that.”

Industry observers, however, suggest this may further strain the already delicate alliance between OpenAI and Microsoft, especially as both companies expand their enterprise offerings in similar directions.

What Makes ChatGPT Agent Different?

Unlike traditional AI tools that wait for human prompts, ChatGPT Agent acts proactively within a user-defined scope. It can:

  • Navigate websites autonomously
  • Fill out forms or browse for information
  • Aggregate content across multiple sources into a single document or report
  • Deliver business outputs that mimic real junior-level work

OpenAI claims that the ChatGPT Agent can take tasks that might traditionally take a junior analyst an entire night and complete them in under an hour—giving managers, executives, and teams more time to focus on strategic decisions.

Still Evolving: Limitations and What’s Next

Currently, ChatGPT Agent doesn’t support Google Workspace tools, a limitation that might restrict adoption among teams deeply embedded in Google’s ecosystem. However, future expansions and partnerships may alter this stance.

The company has not disclosed whether similar functionality will be made available via its API, though developers and businesses have expressed strong interest in customizable agent models.

OpenAI also reassured users that safety and ethical considerations are central to the Agent’s design. The tool operates within a defined security layer, avoiding risky or unauthorized actions while conducting tasks online.

Conclusion: Productivity Reimagined

OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT Agent is a bold leap in the evolution of AI-powered productivity tools. By combining deep web research with task automation, the company is redefining how knowledge workers operate.

While the competition with Microsoft and other tech giants is likely to intensify, one thing is clear: AI agents are no longer futuristic concepts—they’re rapidly becoming essential tools in the modern workplace.

For users, the promise is simple yet powerful: faster, smarter, and more automated productivity—delivered seamlessly through a tool they already trust.
