Mumbai: BMC to Undertake Post-Monsoon Repairs on Parel TT Flyover for Structural Safety and Smooth Traffic Flow

Mumbai’s busy Parel TT flyover, a crucial connector between the island city and the eastern suburbs, is set for a significant structural upgrade after the monsoon season. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a detailed repair and rehabilitation plan aimed at ensuring long-term safety and improving traffic movement on this important route.

Why the Repairs Are Needed

According to BMC officials, the decision follows inspections that revealed several structural concerns. The elastomeric bearings of the bridge — critical for accommodating structural movement — have flattened over the years, becoming ineffective. This has led to restricted flexibility in the expansion joints, which in turn affects the bridge’s ability to adapt to load and temperature changes.

Further checks found cracks in the diaphragm and pedestals, also linked to the damaged bearings. Minor cracks were identified in the girders, while vegetation growth on the structure indicated a lack of surface maintenance. Additionally, the presence of mastic patches and closely spaced expansion joints has been causing discomfort for motorists and contributing to congestion during peak hours.

Scope of the Project

The BMC’s rehabilitation plan includes several measures to strengthen the flyover. The most notable is the reduction of expansion joints from the current 22 to just 10, which will allow for better deck continuity. This change, along with replacing the old asphalt surface with a durable concrete deck, is expected to provide a smoother ride and reduce maintenance needs in the future.

The structural upgrade will also involve replacing the worn-out elastomeric bearings with new ones to restore flexibility and movement. The repairs to cracks, removal of vegetation, and replacement of damaged elements will collectively improve the flyover’s safety and lifespan.
 

Traffic Management During Repairs
 

Acknowledging the heavy daily traffic on the Parel TT flyover, BMC has stated that repair work will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption. Instead of a full closure, one lane will be shut at a time while the other remains operational. This phased approach will allow vehicles to continue using the bridge during the rehabilitation period.

Permissions from the Mumbai Traffic Police will be sought to implement the traffic diversion plan effectively. Signage and guidance will be provided to ensure motorists are aware of lane closures and alternative routes.

 

Timeline for Completion
 

The most time-consuming part of the project will be the concreting phase, which is expected to take approximately three and a half months. As each lane’s concrete deck is completed and cured, it will be reopened for public use while work progresses on the remaining sections. BMC officials aim to complete the repairs as efficiently as possible, factoring in the high commuter volume in this corridor.
