Mumbai Weather Update: Cloudy Skies Bring AQI Relief; IMD Predicts Thunderstorms Across City

Mumbai: A shift in weather conditions brought much-needed relief to residents on Wednesday, as cloudy skies and cool breezes helped improve air quality across the city.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Mumbai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms and lightning through the day.

Pleasant Weather Conditions Across Key Areas

Visuals from iconic locations like Marine Drive and Nariman Point showed overcast skies, offering a noticeable break from recent heat and haze.

Morning temperature: Around 28°C
Expected range: 26°C to 34°C

The change in weather has contributed to a more comfortable start to the day for Mumbaikars.

Air Quality Improves To ‘Moderate’ Range

Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 62, placing it in the moderate category.

This marks a significant improvement compared to previous weeks when pollution levels were higher. Earlier this month, AQI levels had even dipped to 21–31 in some areas, indicating very clean air.

BMC Action Helps Reduce Pollution

Officials credit the improvement partly to strict enforcement by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Recent actions include:

  • Crackdown on dust-generating construction sites
  • Monitoring of both private and public infrastructure projects
  • Enforcement of pollution control norms

These steps have helped reduce particulate matter in the air.

Pollution Hotspots Remain A Concern

Despite the overall improvement, air quality remains uneven across the city.

  • Ghatkopar East recorded an AQI of 130 (poor)
  • Chembur reported 110 (poor)

Meanwhile, several areas saw much cleaner air:

  • Andheri: AQI 12 (good)
  • Gamdevi: AQI 18 (good)
  • Dahisar & Walkeshwar: AQI 38 (good)
  • Kandivali West: AQI 40 (good)
  • Understanding AQI Levels
  • 0–50: Good
  • 51–100: Moderate
  • 101–200: Poor
  • 201–300: Unhealthy
  • 300+: Severe

Conclusion

While improved weather and enforcement measures have brought temporary relief, inconsistent air quality across different areas highlights the need for sustained efforts.

With thunderstorms likely and conditions remaining dynamic, residents can expect short-term comfort—but long-term vigilance on pollution remains essential.
