Leopard Sightings Spark Panic In Mumbai; Forest Department Launches Safety Drive In Residential Areas

Amid rising leopard sightings in parts of Mumbai, the Forest Department has stepped up efforts to ensure public safety by conducting a targeted awareness drive in residential neighbourhoods.

The campaign was carried out at Sankalp Sahniwas Society in the Nagari Nivara area, where recent leopard movement has triggered concern among residents.

Sightings Increase Fear Among Residents

Over the past few days, multiple leopard sightings have been reported in Sankalp Sahniwas Complex and nearby Raheja Heights, with some incidents occurring as early as evening hours.

The frequency and timing of these sightings have raised anxiety levels, especially among families, as stepping out after dusk is now seen as risky.

Authorities Step In With Awareness Campaign

Responding to growing concerns, forest officials conducted a detailed awareness session to educate residents on co-existing safely with wildlife.

During the drive:

  • Hemant Phanse explained essential safety precautions and emergency responses
  • Nikhil Bangar highlighted leopard behaviour and movement patterns
  • Niket Shinde briefed residents on surveillance measures like CCTV monitoring

The session aimed to replace panic with informed awareness, helping residents understand how to respond calmly in case of encounters.

Key Safety Measures Suggested

Officials advised residents to adopt simple but effective precautions, including:

  • Improving lighting in common areas and streets
  • Installing or strengthening fencing around residential complexes
  • Maintaining cleanliness to avoid attracting stray animals
  • Using CCTV systems to track wildlife movement

These measures are expected to reduce the chances of human-wildlife conflict.

Cages May Be Installed If Sightings Continue

Authorities clarified that if leopard activity persists despite preventive steps, cages may be deployed as per official guidelines to safely capture and relocate the animal.

However, officials stressed that the primary goal remains minimising conflict without harming wildlife, ensuring both human safety and animal protection.

Balancing Urban Expansion and Wildlife

The situation highlights the growing challenge of urban expansion into natural habitats, leading to increased interaction between humans and wildlife.

With informed community participation and timely intervention by authorities, Mumbai aims to manage the situation responsibly while maintaining ecological balance.
