Mumbai Gets Its First Large-Scale EV Charging Hub by Tata Power & Tata Motors
On World EV Day, Mumbai took a bold step toward strengthening its clean mobility ecosystem with the launch of its first large-scale, premium EV charging hub. Developed under the TATA.ev MegaCharger initiative, the facility is a collaboration between Tata Power and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, marking a milestone in India’s green mobility journey.
The hub was officially inaugurated by Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Power, and Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited.
A Strategic Location at Mumbai’s Gateway
Situated near Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, within the premises of The Leela Mumbai Hotel, the MegaCharger hub is uniquely positioned to cater to Mumbai’s diverse EV community. From private car owners to fleet operators, ride-hailing services, and even logistics companies, this facility ensures access to reliable charging at one of the busiest transit and business corridors in the city.
Its proximity to Andheri, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), and South Mumbai makes it convenient not just for Mumbaikars but also for business travelers, hotel guests, and frequent flyers who demand quick and efficient charging options.
Features That Set the Hub Apart
The hub is equipped with eight ultra-fast DC chargers with capacities of up to 120 kW, spread across 16 charging bays. This means that 16 electric vehicles can be charged simultaneously, a significant upgrade over typical urban charging stations that often lead to waiting times.
By eliminating congestion at charging points, this hub is designed to support the rapidly growing EV ecosystem in India’s financial capital. The fact that it is powered entirely by renewable energy also makes it a showcase of sustainability.
Voices of Leadership
At the inauguration, Dr. Praveer Sinha emphasized Tata Power’s role in shaping India’s EV future.
“The launch of this fast-charging hub reflects our integrated approach to accelerating India’s green mobility transition. With renewable energy at its core, this installation sets a benchmark for future-ready EV infrastructure. As we replicate such hubs across major cities, our focus remains on creating sustainable and seamless solutions for EV users,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Shailesh Chandra highlighted the role of Tata Motors in building a complete EV ecosystem.
“We have been at the forefront of India’s EV revolution—not just by manufacturing world-class vehicles, but also by enabling a robust charging infrastructure. This hub is the first of many such installations in partnership with Tata Power. Together, we aim to empower EV owners with reliable, accessible, and fast-charging facilities across the country,” he added.
Benefits for EV Owners
While the charging hub is open to all EV users, TATA.ev customers will enjoy exclusive perks such as:
- Up to 25% discount on charging tariffs.
- Priority access to chargers during peak hours.
- Seamless integration with Tata Power’s EZ Charge app and the upcoming iRA.ev Connected Car app for Tata EVs.
Currently, Tata Power’s EZ Charge app has over 4 lakh registered users, providing convenient access to nearby chargers, tariff details, and digital payments.
A Growing EV Ecosystem
This installation adds to Tata Power’s expanding network of 1,000+ green charging points in Mumbai and over 5,500 charging stations nationwide. The company also operates 1.4 lakh home chargers and 1,200+ bus charging stations across more than 630 cities and towns in India.
By 2030, Tata Power has set ambitious goals:
- 7.5 lakh home chargers across India.
- 10,000 public charging points in urban and highway locations.
This roadmap aligns with its ‘Sustainable is Attainable’ movement, aimed at embedding clean energy practices into everyday life and creating an eco-friendly urban future.
Why This Matters for Mumbai
Mumbai, as India’s financial hub, sees one of the highest vehicle densities in the country. With rising fuel costs, growing traffic congestion, and a pressing need for cleaner air, EV adoption is critical. However, a key barrier has been the lack of reliable charging infrastructure.
The MegaCharger hub helps fill that gap by providing a scalable, high-speed, and renewable-powered solution. It not only enhances convenience for existing EV owners but also encourages more residents and businesses to make the switch to electric mobility.
Conclusion: A Future-Ready Step
The inauguration of Mumbai’s first large-scale EV charging hub is more than a symbolic gesture on World EV Day. It is a forward-looking move that showcases how partnerships between automakers and energy providers can create meaningful change.
With Tata Power and Tata Motors leading the charge, Mumbai is poised to become a model for sustainable mobility. The city’s first MegaCharger hub not only makes EV charging faster and more accessible but also reinforces India’s journey toward a greener, cleaner tomorrow.
