Maharashtra to Launch AI-Based Digital Autopsy Facilities at KEM and JJ Hospitals

Mumbai is set to witness a major transformation in forensic medicine as the Maharashtra government prepares to introduce AI-based digital autopsy facilities at two of the city’s largest public hospitals—KEM Hospital and JJ Hospital. The move marks a significant shift away from traditional postmortem procedures, bringing technology-driven, non-invasive examinations into the public healthcare system.

The initiative will be implemented in phases, beginning with these two hospitals, and is expected to set a new benchmark for accuracy, efficiency, and sensitivity in postmortem investigations.

What Is a Digital Autopsy?

A digital autopsy uses advanced imaging technologies such as CT scans, MRI, and high-resolution 3D imaging to examine internal organs and identify the cause of death. Unlike conventional autopsies, this method does not require surgical incisions, ensuring that the body remains intact throughout the examination.

Artificial intelligence assists doctors in analysing imaging data, helping detect internal injuries, organ damage, fractures, or abnormalities with greater precision.

Improving Accuracy and Supporting Investigations

Officials believe that digital autopsy will significantly improve the accuracy of postmortem findings, especially in cases involving accidents, suicides, murders, and other suspicious deaths. The technology allows forensic experts to conduct detailed examinations that can be digitally stored and reviewed later if required.

Digitally preserved records are expected to be particularly useful in long-running criminal investigations and judicial proceedings, where postmortem evidence often plays a critical role.

Proposal in Progress at KEM Hospital

Senior doctors at KEM Hospital confirmed that the Forensic Medicine Department has already submitted an initial proposal for the digital autopsy facility. A detailed plan will be presented to the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) in the coming week.

Once approved, the proposal will be forwarded to the state government, after which the tender process for procuring the necessary imaging and AI equipment will begin.

JJ Hospital Upgrades Forensic Infrastructure

At JJ Hospital, preparations are already underway. Dean Dr. Ajay Bhandarwar confirmed that renovation and infrastructure upgrades are in progress within the forensic department to accommodate the new digital systems.

These upgrades are aimed at ensuring smooth integration of high-end imaging machines and creating a suitable environment for advanced forensic analysis.

Training and Research Benefits

Beyond postmortem examinations, the digital autopsy facilities will serve as a valuable tool for medical education and research. Medical students, forensic experts, and doctors will gain hands-on exposure to cutting-edge forensic technology, opening new avenues for training and academic study.

Experts say this could position Maharashtra as a leader in modern forensic medicine in India.

Faster Process, Greater Sensitivity for Families

One of the most significant advantages of digital autopsy is the reduction in time required to complete postmortem procedures. Faster examinations mean quicker handover of bodies to families, easing emotional distress during an already difficult time.

By eliminating invasive procedures, the technology also addresses cultural and emotional sensitivities associated with traditional autopsies, making the process more respectful for grieving families.

Statewide Expansion Planned

If the pilot project at KEM and JJ hospitals proves successful, the Maharashtra government plans to extend digital autopsy facilities to other government hospitals across the state. Officials see this as a long-term investment in modernising public healthcare and strengthening the criminal justice system.
