BMC to Build ₹418-Crore Cable-Stayed Bridge Connecting Goregaon and Oshiwara, Completion by 2028
To tackle mounting traffic congestion along S V Road and Link Road, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the construction of a ₹418-crore cable-stayed bridge connecting Goregaon and Oshiwara across Goregaon Creek. The ambitious infrastructure project is set to commence next month and is slated for completion by October 2028, offering a long-term solution to traffic snarls in one of Mumbai’s busiest corridors.
The bridge project is designed not only to improve traffic flow but also to enhance urban connectivity between Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala, and Goregaon. The initiative underscores the city’s commitment to modern infrastructure solutions while balancing environmental considerations.
Bridge Design and Specifications
The proposed 542-metre cable-stayed bridge will run along the 36.6-metre-wide DP Road, connecting Link Road with Bhagat Singh Nagar at Goregaon and Oshiwara in Andheri. The bridge will provide a direct approach to Bhagat Singh Nagar, significantly reducing travel times for daily commuters.
The 238-metre cable-stayed section will form part of a total 28.55-metre-wide structure, featuring six lanes—three in each direction, along with a 0.45-metre median and 1.5-metre-wide utility corridors on either side of the carriageways. This design ensures adequate capacity for current traffic while allowing for future growth.
Approval and Environmental Considerations
The project faced delays over the past three years due to approvals from agencies like the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, particularly concerning protected mangrove areas. It recently received final High Court clearance, enabling work to commence in compliance with environmental regulations.
The BMC had already issued necessary notices for work in the mangrove areas. Construction is expected to start in November, with an estimated timeline of 36 months, excluding monsoon months. Civic officials emphasized that the cable-stayed design was selected to minimize environmental impact, protect mangroves, maintain the watercourse, and create an aesthetically attractive structure for the cityscape.

Addressing Traffic Congestion and Urban Connectivity

Mumbai’s S V Road and Link Road corridors have long been plagued by heavy traffic, especially during peak hours. The new bridge will divert a significant portion of commuter traffic, easing congestion in residential and commercial zones. Urban planners highlight that such infrastructure projects not only improve travel efficiency but also contribute to safer road conditions and reduced pollution caused by idling vehicles.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to transform connectivity between key western suburbs, supporting smoother movement of goods and commuters alike, and acting as a catalyst for local economic activity.
Looking Ahead: A Modern, Sustainable Mumbai

The Goregaon–Oshiwara cable-stayed bridge exemplifies Mumbai’s efforts to integrate modern engineering solutions with environmental sensitivity. By combining enhanced mobility with careful preservation of natural ecosystems like mangroves, the project sets a benchmark for sustainable urban infrastructure development in the city.
As the city prepares for completion by 2028, commuters, residents, and local businesses can anticipate a tangible improvement in daily travel efficiency, reduced congestion, and a safer, greener urban environment. This initiative reflects Mumbai’s broader vision of smart, sustainable, and future-ready infrastructure.
