FedEx to Anchor Navi Mumbai International Airport with Major Cargo Hub, Groundbreaking Today

Mumbai: In a significant boost to Maharashtra’s logistics infrastructure, global courier major FedEx is set to establish a dedicated cargo hub at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The project will formally commence with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Wednesday in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The move signals a strategic expansion of air cargo capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as freight operations gradually transition from the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which is preparing for extensive airside infrastructure upgrades.

Strategic Timing Amid Airport Transition

CSMIA is expected to temporarily scale down or suspend cargo handling later this year to facilitate runway and airside development work. As a result, several international freighter operators are preparing to shift operations to NMIA, which is being positioned as the region’s next major logistics gateway.

FedEx’s decision to anchor its operations at NMIA comes at a critical juncture, reinforcing confidence in the airport’s long-term cargo ambitions.

Industry observers note that the hub could become FedEx’s first fully dedicated cargo facility in India, marking a milestone in the company’s regional expansion strategy.

A High-Tech Logistics Gateway

The planned facility will function as a centralised logistics hub, handling both domestic and international shipments. Cargo hubs serve as consolidation and distribution centres where goods are sorted, processed, and redirected to various destinations, significantly improving efficiency across supply chains.

The NMIA hub is expected to feature advanced automation, modern handling systems, and streamlined customs processes to enable faster turnaround times.

Leveraging Port Connectivity

A major advantage of NMIA lies in its proximity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s largest container port. The close integration between air and sea freight corridors is expected to strengthen multimodal logistics capabilities, offering seamless connectivity for exporters and importers.

By combining port access with air cargo operations, NMIA aims to position itself as a comprehensive trade and logistics ecosystem rather than merely an alternative airport.

Expanding Cargo Capacity at NMIA

The new airport has earmarked nearly 29 hectares exclusively for cargo infrastructure. Plans include:

• 10 dedicated freighter parking stands
• Automated cargo terminals
• Advanced warehousing facilities
• Annual cargo handling capacity targeted at 2.6 million metric tonnes

These provisions are designed to absorb growing freight demand in western India while supporting Mumbai’s status as a commercial capital.
