Pipeline Burst Causes Massive Water Wastage In Mumbai's Saki Naka; BMC Repairs Hours After Complaint

A pipeline burst on Andheri Kurla Road in Mumbai’s Saki Naka area led to heavy water wastage on June 3. The incident caused water to gush out forcefully and spread across the road, raising concerns among locals and commuters.

Pipeline Burst Reported On Andheri Kurla Road

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reportedly acted after the pipeline burst was brought to its notice. Civic teams reached the spot and began the required repair work to stop the leakage.

Further details about what caused the pipeline to burst, whether water supply was affected in nearby areas, and the exact restoration timeline were not immediately available.

Video Shows Water Gushing Like A Fountain

A video of the incident was shared by GalliNews on X. The visuals showed water coming out with strong pressure, almost like a fountain, and flooding part of the road.

The video quickly drew attention as the city is already facing controlled water supply due to low lake levels.

BMC Registers Complaint On MARG System

After the video surfaced on social media, the BMC registered a complaint on the MARG, which is the Management and Redressal of Grievances system of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.

Soon after, officials from the L Ward shared an update along with images from the location, showing that the repair work had been completed.

Incident Comes Amid 10% Water Cut In Mumbai

The pipeline burst comes at a time when Mumbai is already under a 10% water cut. The BMC imposed the cut from May 15 to ensure that the city has enough water supply till August 19.

The timing of the incident has made the water wastage even more concerning for citizens.

Mumbai’s Lake Water Stock Remains Low

Mumbai gets its water supply from seven lakes: Modak Sagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna.

As per civic data from June 2, the total useful water stock in these lakes had dropped to 2.13 lakh million litres, which is around 15.30% of the total capacity.

The useful water content in Upper Vaitarna has already been exhausted. Among the remaining lakes, Modak Sagar stood at 33.89%, Vihar at 45.71%, Tulsi at 27.10%, Middle Vaitarna at 22.21%, Bhatsa at 14.57% and Tansa at 10.58%.

BMC Repair Work Completed

While the burst led to visible water wastage on the busy road, the BMC’s L Ward later shared that the repair work had been completed. The civic body has not yet given more details about the cause of the pipeline damage.
