Mumbai Sees Sudden Morning Showers; IMD Puts City Under Yellow Alert

Mumbai residents woke up to unexpected patches of rain on Tuesday morning, as light showers swept through several parts of the city and nearby suburbs. The sudden change in weather has raised questions about whether Mumbai is heading for more unseasonal rainfall in the coming days.

Rainfall activity was largely seen across western, central, and eastern suburbs, while South Mumbai remained mostly dry. This marks the second rain spell in the city this year, following showers reported earlier on January 1.

Suburbs Record Uneven Rainfall

Early morning showers were reported from areas such as Dahisar, Andheri, Powai, Kurla, and Ghatkopar, leaving roads damp and skies overcast. Residents in parts of Navi Mumbai and Thane also experienced light to moderate rainfall, particularly around peak morning travel hours.

In contrast, several south-western suburbs witnessed only brief drizzles or no rain at all. South Mumbai, including key business districts, largely escaped the wet conditions during the morning hours.

IMD Issues Short-Term Weather Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast warning at 7 am, placing Mumbai and Thane under a Yellow Alert for a few hours. The advisory warned of intermittent light rain and urged citizens to remain cautious while commuting.

Meteorologists indicated that such localised rain spells are caused by moisture build-up and shifting cloud patterns, which may result in isolated showers rather than continuous rainfall.

Haze and Reduced Visibility Add to Commuter Concerns

Despite the rain, a noticeable layer of haze was observed in some parts of the city, especially in Wadala and industrial zones. The combination of moisture and haze reduced visibility in the early hours, creating a gloomy start to the day.

Traffic movement remained largely normal, though commuters were advised to slow down, as sudden rain spells and slippery roads could pose safety risks.

What Lies Ahead?

Weather officials have said that further updates will depend on how cloud formations move over the Mumbai Metropolitan Region during the day. While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected at the moment, brief showers cannot be ruled out.

Citizens have been advised to stay alert, keep track of IMD advisories, and plan travel accordingly as Mumbai continues to experience unpredictable winter weather patterns.
