Mumbai Rains Surge Lake Levels by Over 5 Meters; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Showers and Gusty Winds

Mumbai, July 7: The city of Mumbai witnessed a significant rise in lake water levels over the past 24 hours as heavy monsoon rains continue to lash the region. According to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a yellow alert has been sounded for Mumbai due to heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

As of 9 AM on Sunday, Mumbai was experiencing light rain at 29°C, with wind speeds reaching 31 km/h and humidity levels at 80%. The IMD has predicted consistent light rain throughout the day and similar weather patterns for the rest of the week. Temperatures are expected to remain steady between 27°C and 29°C, accompanied by intermittent rainfall and possible thunderstorms, particularly on Monday.

Surge in Lake Water Levels Across Mumbai

The Hydraulic Engineer’s Department has confirmed a sharp increase in water levels across the city’s seven major lakes, which are vital for Mumbai’s water supply. As per the 6:00 AM report on July 7:

  • Middle Vaitarna showed the most significant rise, with an increase of 5.31 meters, now holding 1507 ML of usable storage.
  • Modak Sagar recorded an increase of 1.85 meters, contributing 1376 ML.
  • Tansa saw a jump of 1.07 meters, with 1286 ML of capacity.
  • Upper Vaitarna rose by 0.12 meters, containing 910 ML.
  • Bhatsa saw a modest gain of 0.10 meters, now holding 621 ML.
  • Vehar increased slightly by 0.06 meters, with a cumulative total of 1112 ML.
  • Tulsi Lake stood at 134.30 meters.

Mumbai recorded 44 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, bringing the monthly total to 674 mm.

Water Supply Outlook for Mumbai

As per officials, 578,270 ML of Bhatsa’s usable water content has been allocated for MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai). No discharges were reported from Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna’s gates remain closed, indicating active water retention and supply management in anticipation of prolonged rains.

The healthy rise in lake levels offers some relief to Mumbaikars, as the city often faces the threat of water shortages during weaker monsoon spells.

High Tide and Weather Alerts in Place

The IMD has also issued a high tide alert valid till July 11, warning of strong winds ranging from 40–60 km/h along the North Maharashtra coast. Similar squally conditions have been forecasted across parts of the Arabian Sea, particularly near Somalia, Oman, and Yemen. Fishermen have been advised to steer clear of these regions due to stormy sea conditions.

Weekly Forecast: Light Rain, Mild Temperatures Ahead

Looking ahead, Mumbai will continue to see light rainfall, with no immediate signs of respite. Temperatures are expected to remain between 27°C and 29°C, with high humidity and occasional chances of isolated thunderstorms, particularly at the start of the week.

Commuters should expect waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas and are advised to plan their journeys accordingly. Authorities remain on alert, monitoring the situation closely to respond to any potential emergency caused by heavy rains.

Conclusion: Relief for Water Reserves Amid Rain Concerns

While the surge in water levels brings some reassurance about Mumbai’s water security for the upcoming months, the constant rainfall, combined with high tides and strong winds, poses a challenge for city infrastructure. Municipal authorities continue to work round the clock, and citizens are urged to stay informed through official IMD and BMC channels.
