Maharashtra Plans ₹70,000-Crore Green Data Centre Park, Project to Create 7,000 Jobs
Mumbai: Maharashtra is set to strengthen its position as a major destination for digital infrastructure and clean energy investment, with ReNew Wind Energy Private Limited signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to develop an integrated green data centre park worth ₹70,000 crore.
The proposed project will have a planned IT capacity of 750 MW and will be developed across locations along the Navi Mumbai industrial corridor, including Panvel, Khalapur, Taloja and Bhokharpada. Operations are expected to commence in phases from 2028.
Project to Integrate Renewable Energy
A key feature of the proposed data centre park is the requirement to integrate 51% green power into its energy supply. The initiative aims to support the growing demand for data storage and computing infrastructure while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
The project will also include dedicated power infrastructure supplied through two independent sources. This arrangement is intended to improve power reliability and help data centre operators maintain uninterrupted services.
Employment Opportunities and Economic Growth
The development is projected to generate approximately 7,000 jobs, including more than 2,000 direct employment opportunities. The project could also create additional economic activity through construction, infrastructure development and supporting services.
With demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI) and enterprise technology services increasing, the proposed facility is expected to support the expansion of digital infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Maharashtra Government to Facilitate Project Development
P. Anbalagan, IAS, Principal Secretary of the Industries, Investment and Services Department and CEO of Invest Maharashtra, said the state government would facilitate the necessary permissions, clearances, registrations and eligible fiscal incentives to support the project.
He noted that the initiative aligns with Maharashtra's efforts to attract investment in high-growth sectors such as digital infrastructure and clean energy, supporting the state's ambition to become a $1 trillion economy.
A ReNew representative said the project would allow the company to apply its renewable energy capabilities to India's expanding digital infrastructure sector. The combination of green power and dual-source electricity supply is intended to support reliable, large-scale computing operations.
ReNew Expands Its Clean Energy Presence in Maharashtra
ReNew has an existing wind and solar portfolio of 2.5 GW in Maharashtra, with investments reported at approximately ₹15,000 crore. The proposed data centre park represents a further step in the company's expansion into sustainable digital infrastructure.
The project is expected to contribute to Maharashtra's investment and employment objectives while supporting the growing technology ecosystem around Navi Mumbai and neighbouring industrial areas.
If implemented as planned, the development could strengthen the region's role in India's data centre industry by combining large-scale computing capacity with renewable energy integration.
