Fadnavis Says Bloomberg Partnership Will Support Maharashtra’s Development and Urban Growth

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed confidence that the state government’s continued partnership with Bloomberg will contribute to Maharashtra’s development, particularly in urban infrastructure, public health, road safety and governance.

Fadnavis made the remarks during a meeting with Bloomberg founder Mike Bloomberg in Mumbai. Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, investment advisor Kaustubh Dhavse and several prominent industrialists also attended the meeting, according to an official release.

Welcoming Mike Bloomberg, a businessman and former three-term mayor of New York City, the chief minister highlighted the similarities between Mumbai and other major global cities. He also acknowledged Bloomberg’s contribution to Maharashtra and its development initiatives.

Bloomberg Strengthens Its Presence in Maharashtra

Fadnavis noted that Bloomberg had completed 30 years of business operations in India, with Maharashtra serving as a key centre for its activities. The company’s Indian headquarters is located in Mumbai, while its engineering team in Pune contributes to the development of Bloomberg Terminals.

The company has established a significant presence in financial data, technology and journalism. Its continued investment in the state has also strengthened Maharashtra’s position as an important business and technology hub.

The chief minister said the partnership between Bloomberg and the Maharashtra government had supported several public-interest initiatives, including road safety programmes, health information systems, healthy cities and improvements in governance. These efforts are being undertaken in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.

Mumbai Metro Expansion Among Key Infrastructure Priorities

Speaking about Maharashtra’s infrastructure development, Fadnavis highlighted the expansion of Mumbai’s Metro network. According to him, the network, which previously extended to around 11 km, is being expanded towards a planned total of approximately 350 km.

Nearly 100 km of Metro lines are currently operational, while another 70 km is expected to be commissioned by next year. The state government aims to make the entire planned network operational by 2029–30.

Fadnavis also pointed to ongoing investments in public transportation in Pune and other cities. He said strengthening mass transit systems in Tier-II cities could improve urban mobility and encourage more people to use public transport.

The chief minister added that infrastructure development across the country was progressing in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of improving connectivity and modernising urban transportation.

Mike Bloomberg Reaffirms Commitment to India

Mike Bloomberg described Maharashtra as one of India’s important economic states and welcomed the milestone of completing three decades of business operations in the country.

Recalling the company’s early days in India, he said Bloomberg had grown from operating out of a small shared workspace to establishing its Indian headquarters in Mumbai. The company continues to invest in Mumbai and other parts of India, while more than 100 engineers work at its Pune facility.

Bloomberg also indicated plans to expand the company’s engineering centre in Pune, reflecting its continued focus on technology and talent development in India.

He further emphasised that Bloomberg’s engagement with India extends beyond commercial operations. For nearly two decades, the company has supported initiatives related to public health, road safety, sanitation and clean energy.

The meeting highlighted the potential for continued cooperation between the Maharashtra government and Bloomberg in areas that support sustainable urban development, stronger public services and improved quality of life across the state.
