Maharashtra’s First Prepaid Auto-Rickshaw Service Starts at Thane Station to Bring Fare Transparency

Tech-enabled prepaid system aims to reduce fare disputes and make daily commuting easier

Maharashtra has introduced its first tech-enabled prepaid auto-rickshaw service at Thane Railway Station, giving commuters a more transparent way to travel while helping drivers manage their earnings more efficiently.

The new service is designed to address common issues such as fare disagreements, unorganized queues and uncertainty over trip costs. Under the prepaid system, passengers can know the fare before starting their journey, creating a clearer and more structured travel experience.

Thane Railway Station Gets Dedicated Prepaid Auto Stand

The initiative has been developed by the Late Vasantrao Davkhare Auto-Taxi Driver-Owner Federation, Thane, in association with the Thane Regional Transport Office (RTO).

A dedicated prepaid auto-rickshaw stand and commuter help desk have been established at Thane Railway Station. The facility is expected to bring greater order to the busy station’s auto-rickshaw operations and make it easier for passengers to find authorized services.

The inauguration was attended by MLC Adv. Niranjan Davkhare, Thane City MLA Sanjay Kelkar, Thane RTO officials, Rickshaw Union President Maruti Sawant, union representatives, women representatives and a large number of auto-rickshaw drivers.

Two-Year Effort to Improve Auto Services

The prepaid auto service follows almost two years of efforts to address transportation challenges at Thane Railway Station. Unorganized queues, unclear fares and frequent disagreements between passengers and drivers were among the key issues identified during this period.

Since Maharashtra did not previously have a similar prepaid auto-rickshaw framework, the initiative required administrative and technical coordination. Measures were also considered to support drivers' daily cash-flow needs and encourage wider participation in the system.

Technology Provides Fare Details Before the Ride

Technology is at the center of the new prepaid auto-rickshaw model. Cityflo is managing the technology and operational side of the service.

Its platform enables standardized fare calculations and allows passengers to see the applicable fare before beginning their journey. This upfront information can reduce confusion and help passengers plan their travel expenses more easily.

The system also creates a more organized process for drivers, with technology supporting trip management and fare collection.

Drivers to Receive Daily Earnings Directly in Bank Accounts

The new model also focuses on improving financial management for participating auto-rickshaw drivers.

According to Adv. Niranjan Davkhare, the earnings generated during a driver's daily shifts will be transferred directly to the driver's bank account at the end of the day. The automated payment system is intended to provide greater financial stability for drivers and their families.

New Model Aims to Improve Thane Commuter Experience

The prepaid auto-rickshaw service at Thane Railway Station marks a new approach to managing last-mile transportation in Maharashtra. By combining prepaid fares, technology and a dedicated service point, the initiative aims to make auto travel more predictable for commuters.

The project is also expected to create a more structured working environment for drivers while reducing disagreements over fares. If the model performs well, it could provide a framework for improving prepaid auto services at other busy transportation hubs in the future.
