Mumbai’s First Metro-Integrated Flyover Set to Improve East-West Connectivity by 2027

5.08-Km Elevated Corridor to Link Andheri West With Poonam Nagar

Mumbai is preparing to get its first flyover integrated with a metro corridor, a major infrastructure project designed to improve east-west connectivity across the city. The 5.08-kilometer elevated corridor will connect New Link Road near Infinity Mall in Andheri West with Poonam Nagar along the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR).

The project will be opened in phases. The first section from Infinity Mall to JVLR Junction is targeted for completion by December 2026. The remaining stretch up to Poonam Nagar, including a cable-stayed bridge, is expected to be completed by May 2027.

Flyover and Metro Line 6 to Share an Elevated Corridor

The project was proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Since part of the planned alignment overlaps with Metro Line 6, the remaining construction work was handed over to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Around 0.93 kilometers of the total flyover length has already been constructed by the BMC. The remaining work is being developed in two major sections, with one portion designed as a double-decker structure carrying both the road flyover and Metro Line 6.

The 2.58-kilometer first portion has reached about 80% physical progress. This section forms the integrated double-decker corridor and is expected to be ready by December 2026.

Second Section Includes 120-Meter Cable-Stayed Bridge

The second portion covers around 1.58 kilometers and includes a single-level flyover, ramps and a 120-meter cable-stayed bridge.

The bridge will cross the Western Express Highway and the operational Metro Line 7, creating an important link between the western and eastern sections of the city. Construction on this portion has reached 58.41% progress.

The second phase, running from JVLR Junction to Poonam Nagar, is targeted for completion by May 2027.

Project Expected to Reduce Traffic Pressure

Once fully operational, the elevated corridor is expected to create a continuous east-west connection between Andheri West and Poonam Nagar. It is also designed to address traffic congestion at key locations such as Infinity Mall Junction, SV Road Junction and JVLR Junction near the Western Express Highway.

The improved connection is expected to make movement along JVLR smoother and more direct. It could also help reduce travel time between Link Road, SV Road and JVLR by providing an elevated route for through traffic.

Separate Levels Designed for Smoother Traffic Movement

The integrated design will allow different types of traffic to move across separate elevated levels. This arrangement is expected to reduce conflicts between local traffic and vehicles traveling through the corridor.

With the flyover and Metro Line 6 working together on parts of the alignment, the project represents a major step in Mumbai’s approach to combining road and public transport infrastructure within a single corridor.

The phased opening beginning in December 2026, followed by the expected completion of the Poonam Nagar section in May 2027, is expected to improve connectivity and provide another important east-west travel route for Mumbai commuters.
