Maharashtra Seeks ₹5,000 Crore From Centre for Pune Growth Hub, Aims to Transform Region Into Global Economic Center

Maharashtra is preparing to seek ₹5,000 crore in financial support from the Central Government to develop the proposed Pune Growth Hub. The initiative aims to strengthen Pune's economy, attract new investments, create employment opportunities, and improve infrastructure across the Pune Metropolitan Region.

The state government plans to submit the Growth Hub's master plan to the Union Government by the end of November 2026. The initial funding request of ₹5,000 crore will support the first phase of the development project, officials said.

Pune Growth Hub Master Plan to Be Submitted by November 2026

Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar confirmed the proposed funding request while reviewing the progress of the initiative.

She said the master plan for Pune Growth Hub would be submitted to the Central Government by the end of November. The state will also request ₹5,000 crore in funding for the project's first phase.

The initiative is designed to make Pune a world-class economic destination through planned infrastructure development, better connectivity, and coordinated growth across different sectors.

Maharashtra Reviews Progress of Pune Growth Hub Project

Sunetra Ajit Pawar recently chaired a review meeting to assess the development plan and progress of the Pune Growth Hub initiative.

Several senior government officials and representatives from key development agencies attended the meeting. These included Nitin Karir, Chairman of the Sixth State Finance Commission; Sheetal Teli-Ugle, Divisional Commissioner; Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of MahaMetro; and Naval Kishor Ram, Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation.

Other officials present included Vijay Suryavanshi, Commissioner of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation; Abhijit Chaudhary, Commissioner of Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority; Jitendra Dudi, Pune District Collector; and Gajanan Patil, Chief Executive Officer of Pune Zilla Parishad.

The review focused on coordinating development activities and preparing a comprehensive roadmap for the region's future economic growth.

Pune Growth Hub Part of NITI Aayog's National Development Initiative

The Pune Growth Hub is part of a national initiative introduced by NITI Aayog to promote economic development in major Indian cities.

Under this program, Growth Hub projects are being developed in cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Varanasi, and Visakhapatnam.

To move the Pune initiative forward, the Maharashtra Government, NITI Aayog, and Pune International Centre signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in August 2025.

The partnership aims to identify economic opportunities, encourage investment, and create a long-term development strategy for the Pune Metropolitan Region.

Key Sectors Identified for Pune Metropolitan Region's Economic Growth

The proposed development plan will focus on several important sectors that can strengthen Pune's position as a major economic and investment destination.

The key sectors include:

  • Industrial Development: Strengthening manufacturing activities and creating opportunities for new industries.
  • Information Technology: Expanding Pune's IT ecosystem and attracting technology companies.
  • Automobile Industry: Supporting the growth of the automobile and manufacturing sectors.
  • Education and Research: Promoting educational institutions, innovation, and research facilities.
  • Aviation: Improving aviation-related infrastructure and connectivity.
  • Healthcare: Strengthening medical facilities and healthcare services.
  • Agriculture: Supporting agricultural development and related industries.

By bringing these sectors together under a coordinated development strategy, the government aims to create new business opportunities, attract investments, and generate more jobs.

How Will the Pune Growth Hub Benefit Maharashtra?

The Pune Growth Hub is expected to support long-term economic development across the Pune Metropolitan Region. Better infrastructure, improved connectivity, and sector-based planning could help the region attract domestic and international investments.

The proposed ₹5,000 crore funding request represents an important step toward taking the initiative forward. Once the master plan is submitted and the funding proposal is considered by the Central Government, the project can move toward its next stage of development.

With its strong industrial base, IT companies, educational institutions, and automobile sector, Pune has significant potential to become one of India's leading economic growth centers.
