MHADA Sets October 20 Deadline for GTB Nagar Shopkeepers and Slum Dwellers to Vacate Premises

MHADA Sets October 20 Deadline for GTB Nagar Shopkeepers and Slum Dwellers to Vacate Premises

Eligible Occupants to Receive Monthly Rent Support as Mumbai Redevelopment Project Moves Forward

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has set October 20, 2026, as the deadline for shopkeepers, shanty owners, and hutment holders in Mumbai’s GTB Nagar redevelopment project to voluntarily vacate their premises. The move aims to clear the site and speed up redevelopment work while giving affected occupants time to make necessary arrangements.

MHADA has also announced rental assistance for eligible occupants. A total of 121 eligible non-residential shanty and hutment holders will receive monthly rent of Rs 10,000 starting November 1, 2026. Another 196 conditionally eligible occupants will receive the same monthly amount for six months, subject to the applicable requirements.

MHADA Gives Occupants Time to Vacate Voluntarily

MHADA issued instructions on October 8, 2026, to remove unauthorized structures within the GTB Nagar redevelopment project area. Following the announcement, shopkeepers, shanty owners, and hutment holders met MHADA Vice Chairman and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal IAS to explain their concerns.

The occupants requested additional time to vacate their premises voluntarily. They said immediate eviction or demolition could result in financial losses and create difficulties for their families and businesses.

After hearing their concerns, Jaiswal granted them until October 20, 2026, to vacate the premises on their own. The decision also considers the ongoing Navratri and Dussehra festival period, giving affected people additional time to prepare for the transition.

However, occupants who fail to vacate unauthorized structures by the deadline may face eviction action under the applicable rules. MHADA expects this process to help clear the land and support the next stages of the redevelopment project.

GTB Nagar Redevelopment Preserves a Historic Community

GTB Nagar, also known as Punjabi Colony, has a history spanning more than 70 years. The area became home to Sikh and Punjabi refugee families who migrated to India from Pakistan following independence.

The redevelopment project seeks to transform this historic neighborhood through a planned construction and development process. MHADA is implementing the project under a construction and development agreement, with land clearance serving as an important step toward moving construction forward.

The authority is working to advance the redevelopment while addressing the concerns of affected occupants and processing eligibility claims for rehabilitation and rental support.

121 Occupants Qualify for Rehabilitation Benefits

According to the revised draft Annexure-2, 121 non-residential shanty and hutment holders have been declared eligible under the GTB Nagar redevelopment project. These occupants will receive rehabilitation benefits according to the applicable rules.

In addition, 196 occupants have received conditional eligibility. They have been given six months to submit the required documents and establish their eligibility for the benefits available under the project.

This arrangement gives conditionally eligible occupants an opportunity to complete their documentation while the redevelopment process moves forward.

Monthly Rental Assistance to Begin November 1

MHADA has outlined rental assistance for both eligible and conditionally eligible occupants.

The 121 eligible non-residential shanty and hutment holders will receive Rs 10,000 per month starting November 1, 2026. The 196 conditionally eligible occupants will also receive Rs 10,000 per month for the next six months, during which they must complete the required documentation to confirm their eligibility.

The rental support is intended to help affected occupants manage their transition during the redevelopment process, subject to the applicable conditions.

GTB Nagar Redevelopment Expected to Gain Momentum

The October 20 deadline gives shopkeepers, shanty owners, and hutment holders a defined period to vacate their premises voluntarily. At the same time, the rehabilitation provisions and rental assistance offer support to eligible occupants as the project progresses.

With land clearance underway, MHADA aims to accelerate the GTB Nagar redevelopment project and take the next steps toward transforming the historic neighborhood. The authority's approach combines a clear timeline for vacating unauthorized structures with opportunities for eligible occupants to access rehabilitation and rental benefits under the applicable rules.
