Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Cluster Redevelopment of 19 MHADA Buildings in Khar’s Ramakrishna Nagar

The Maharashtra government has approved a major cluster redevelopment project for 19 MHADA buildings in Ramakrishna Nagar, Khar West, Mumbai. The decision is aimed at replacing aging structures and creating improved housing conditions for residents.

19 MHADA Buildings Set for Redevelopment in Khar West

The Maharashtra Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved the redevelopment proposal along with the appointment of a developer to carry out the project.

The Ramakrishna Nagar complex covers about 25,523.90 square meters and includes 19 buildings. Of these, 18 are residential buildings and one is an office building. The structures were constructed around 1985 and have now reached an age where redevelopment has become an important requirement.

The project is expected to bring better housing infrastructure and a more organized residential environment to the Khar West neighborhood.

MHADA to Lead the Cluster Redevelopment Process

Under the approved plan, MHADA will undertake the cluster redevelopment by appointing a suitable developer for the eligible plots. Plot No. 18 and the plot containing Building No. 1, which houses the office, will remain outside the redevelopment arrangement.

Three buildings located on Plots 5, 7 and 8 were previously allotted by MHADA to the Ramakrishna Nagar Cooperative Housing Society on an ownership basis.

The cluster approach is expected to allow the redevelopment of multiple aging buildings through a coordinated plan instead of treating each structure as an individual project.

High-Powered Committee to Monitor Implementation

To help move the project forward, the Cabinet has also approved the formation of a high-powered committee headed by the Secretary of the Housing Department.

The committee will monitor the redevelopment process and help address issues that could affect implementation. Its role is expected to support coordination among MHADA, the appointed developer and other stakeholders involved in the project.

MHADA Vice President and CEO Sanjeev Jaiswal is also part of the authority's wider effort to advance redevelopment and housing projects across Mumbai while focusing on the planned improvement of aging residential properties.

Ramakrishna Nagar Part of Mumbai’s Older Housing Network

Ramakrishna Nagar is among the housing colonies developed through the Mumbai Board of MHADA as part of the state government's efforts to provide affordable homes to middle- and low-income families.

Between 1950 and 1960, the government developed 56 housing colonies across Mumbai city and its suburbs through the Mumbai Board. These colonies together include 114 housing societies.

The Ramakrishna Nagar Cooperative Housing Society is located at CTS Nos. 872A/1 and 872A/2 in Khar West and forms part of this older housing network.

Redevelopment Expected to Modernize the Residential Area

The Cabinet's decision marks an important step toward the planned redevelopment of the 19-building complex. With MHADA authorized to appoint a developer and a high-powered committee assigned to oversee implementation, the project now has a structured framework for moving ahead.

The redevelopment is expected to replace older buildings with modern housing infrastructure and provide residents with improved living conditions while supporting the planned development of one of Mumbai's established residential neighborhoods.
