MHADA Lottery Deposit May Stay in Applicants’ Bank Accounts Until Results

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is considering a new system that could make its housing lottery process more convenient for applicants. Under the proposed arrangement, applicants may no longer need to transfer the required deposit to MHADA when submitting their lottery applications.

Instead, the money could remain in the applicant’s own bank account. However, the specified amount would be blocked from withdrawal until the lottery process is completed and the results are announced.

The proposed change is aimed at reducing refund delays, improving transparency and ensuring that applicants have better access to their money during the waiting period.

Sanjeev Jaiswal, MHADA Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, is overseeing the proposed changes as the authority works to improve the housing lottery process and make it more applicant friendly.

MHADA Plans New Deposit System for Housing Lottery

MHADA is working on a proposal to change the way deposit money is handled in its housing lotteries. Under the guidance of Sanjeev Jaiswal, the authority is also discussing the new mechanism with banks and exploring ways to introduce it in upcoming lottery schemes.

At present, applicants are generally required to deposit between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000, depending on the housing scheme, while submitting their applications. The money is transferred to MHADA and returned to applicants who are not selected.

The proposed system could remove the need for MHADA to hold these deposits for extended periods.

Applicants Could Keep Their Money in Their Own Accounts

Under the new model, applicants would need to maintain the required deposit in their bank accounts. The amount would be earmarked for the lottery and temporarily restricted from withdrawal.

This means applicants would still have the required funds available in their accounts, but they would not be able to use the blocked amount until the lottery results are declared.

The arrangement could provide a simpler experience, especially when there is a long gap between submitting an application and conducting the lottery draw.

Refund Delays Drive the Proposed Change

The move comes amid concerns over delays in returning deposits to unsuccessful applicants.

Under the existing process, deposits are normally refunded after the lottery results are announced. Refunds can take around 10 to 15 days under regular circumstances.

However, the recently conducted Mumbai Board lottery saw a much longer wait for many applicants. Around 75,000 applicants reportedly had to wait close to three months for their deposits to be returned because of delays in conducting the lottery.

With the proposed bank-based mechanism, applicants would not have to wait for a separate refund after the draw.

MHADA Could Stop Holding Large Applicant Deposits

The proposed system could also reduce the amount of applicant money held by MHADA during the lottery process.

MHADA receives applications from lakhs of people for several housing schemes. Keeping the deposits in applicants’ own bank accounts could therefore reduce the administrative work involved in collecting and later refunding large sums of money.

The system could also make the overall lottery process more efficient and transparent for applicants. Sanjeev Jaiswal is leading the authority’s efforts to examine these improvements and support a smoother application process.

Interest on Deposits Could Stay With Applicants

Another important benefit could be related to interest earned on the deposit amount.

If the lottery takes longer than expected, the money would continue to remain in the applicant’s bank account. Any applicable interest earned on the balance would therefore remain with the applicant instead of being held by MHADA.

The proposed mechanism is expected to give applicants greater control over their funds while also reducing the need for lengthy refund procedures.

New System Could Make MHADA Lottery More Applicant Friendly

If implemented, the new deposit arrangement could bring a significant change to MHADA’s housing lottery process. Applicants would still need to maintain the required funds, but their money would not have to be transferred to MHADA and later refunded if they were not selected.

Under Sanjeev Jaiswal’s leadership, MHADA is examining ways to make the lottery system more transparent, efficient and convenient for applicants.

The bank-based system could help reduce refund-related concerns, simplify administration and provide applicants with a more convenient way to participate in future MHADA housing lotteries.
