3 Slum Redevelopment Started in Jogeshwari, Chembur, and Kurla

Mumbai is undergoing a major transformation as MHADA, in partnership with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), initiates redevelopment in three key slum areas—Jogeshwari, Chembur, and Kurla. This project aims to provide modern housing and enhance city infrastructure.

List of MHADA’s redevelopment plans cover:

  • Jogeshwari: 80 slum households

  • Chembur: 117 slum households

  • Kurla: 110 slum households

These projects will be carried out under Regulation 33(10) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034, specifically designed for slum rehabilitation. The SRA will handle surveys, relocation, and rental support, while MHADA will oversee financing and construction.

Authorities for  Slum Redevelopment

Apart from these three locations, several government agencies are working on slum redevelopment:

  • MMRDA: Redeveloping Ramabai Nagar slums in Ghatkopar East

  • BMC: Managing 77 slum redevelopment schemes

  • MHADA: Handling 24 projects

  • MSRDC, CIDCO, MAHAPRRIT, MIDC, and others: Over 80 redevelopment projects in total

Currently, 2.2 lakh slum households are being targeted for rehabilitation, addressing Mumbai’s urgent housing crisis.

Ramabai Nagar: A Slum-Free Future

One of the biggest projects underway is the Ramabai Nagar redevelopment in Ghatkopar East. Progress so far:

  • 2,900 slums demolished
  • 1,100 more set for clearance by April-end

This project will rehabilitate 16,575 households while also making space for key infrastructure developments like the Eastern Freeway extension from Chheda Nagar to Thane. Once completed, the 31-km signal-free corridor will improve connectivity between Orange Gate and Thane.

Support for Affected Residents

To ease the transition, eligible residents and business owners are receiving financial support:

  • Residential occupants: ₹15,000 per month
  • Commercial space owners (prime locations): ₹30,000 per month
  • Commercial space owners (other locations): ₹25,000 per month

This compensation ensures minimal disruption while offering new, dignified housing options.

Mumbai’s Vision for 2030

Slum redevelopment and affordable housing are key drivers for Mumbai’s goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030. According to the report Developing MMR as a Global Economic Hub, the city needs to rehabilitate 2.2 million slum households, resettling at least 2.8-3 lakh households every year. However, current efforts relocate only 5,000-16,000 households annually, showing the need for faster redevelopment.

A Brighter Future for Mumbai

With active efforts from MHADA, MMRDA, and other agencies, Mumbai is on its way to becoming a better-planned and inclusive city. As senior IAS officer Sanjeev Jaiswal has emphasized, urban development must focus on both growth and the well-being of residents. These projects are a major step toward a cleaner, safer, and more developed Mumbai.
