Maharashtra Plans Air Ambulance Network for Accident Victims as State Pushes Golden Hour Emergency Response

Maharashtra has initiated plans to introduce an air ambulance service for road accident victims in a major move aimed at strengthening emergency medical response across highways and remote regions of the state.

The proposed service is being designed to provide rapid medical transportation and treatment support during the critical “golden hour” following serious road accidents, a period considered crucial for saving lives after trauma injuries.

The initiative comes at a time when Maharashtra continues witnessing a high number of road accidents, prompting authorities to explore faster and more advanced emergency response systems.

Maharashtra Recorded Over 12,000 Road Accidents in Four Months

According to official data, Maharashtra recorded 12,389 road accidents between January and April 2026.

Out of these, 4,827 accidents were fatal, resulting in the deaths of 5,233 people during the four-month period.

The figures have once again highlighted the urgent need for quicker trauma response systems and faster transportation of critically injured patients to hospitals.

Officials stated that delays in emergency medical care, especially on highways and remote stretches, often reduce survival chances for seriously injured victims.

Transport Department Begins Feasibility Planning

The Maharashtra Transport Department has now moved a proposal before the state’s High-Power Committee seeking approval to appoint a consultant for conducting a feasibility study and preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the air ambulance project.

The proposed feasibility exercise is expected to cost approximately ₹29 lakh.

However, the High-Power Committee has directed the department to resubmit the proposal after detailed scrutiny and inputs from the Health Department.

Officials stated that the study will help determine the operational structure, infrastructure requirements and financial feasibility of launching a state-wide emergency air medical network.

Focus on Golden Hour Emergency Treatment

The proposed air ambulance system is primarily aimed at improving medical response during the “golden hour,” the first critical hour after a severe accident when timely treatment can significantly improve survival chances.

Health experts have repeatedly stressed that rapid trauma care and faster transportation to hospitals play a crucial role in reducing fatalities after major road accidents.

Authorities believe the air ambulance network could help bridge gaps created by traffic congestion, poor road connectivity and long travel times to trauma centres.

Major Highways and Remote Areas Likely to Get Priority

Officials stated that the feasibility study will examine accident-prone stretches across Maharashtra along with existing medical and aviation infrastructure.

Priority is expected to be given to major high-risk routes such as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the HinduhRidaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg and key highways in the Konkan and tribal regions.

Remote and difficult-to-access areas where advanced trauma facilities remain limited are also expected to be included in the planning process.

Study to Examine Helipads, Staffing and PPP Model

The proposed study will evaluate several operational aspects required for launching the service.

This includes mapping available helipad infrastructure, assessing medical preparedness, calculating operational costs and examining the availability of trained medical staff.
Officials are also studying the possibility of implementing the project through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The state government is additionally reviewing air ambulance systems currently operating in states such as Kerala, Karnataka and Delhi.

Rising Focus on Emergency Medical Infrastructure

Recent major highway accidents in Maharashtra, especially on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, have intensified discussions around the need for advanced emergency response mechanisms.
Authorities believe an air ambulance network could become an important addition to Maharashtra’s broader road safety and healthcare infrastructure strategy.

The initiative also aligns with repeated calls from the Central government to improve emergency treatment access for accident victims on national and state highways.

Final Decision Awaited After Feasibility Review

The final implementation decision will be taken after the feasibility report and DPR are reviewed by the Health Department and the High-Power Committee.

If approved, the project could become one of Maharashtra’s biggest emergency medical response upgrades in recent years.

Officials believe the proposed service has the potential to significantly improve accident survival rates while strengthening trauma-care accessibility across urban, highway and remote regions of the state.
