Mumbai Metro Update: Partial Operations Of Line 4 & 4A Between Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction Likely To Begin By November 2026

Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction Metro Stretch May Open Later Than Expected

Commuters in Thane waiting for the launch of Mumbai Metro Line 4 and 4A may have to wait a little longer. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is now reportedly aiming to begin partial operations on the Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction stretch by November 2026.

As per a Times of India report, the stretch is close to completion, with nearly 90 per cent of the work already finished. However, passenger operations are likely to begin only after the remaining work is completed and all mandatory safety clearances are secured.

Mulund Slab Collapse Impacted Metro Line 4 Timeline

The project timeline was reportedly affected after a parapet slab collapsed in Mulund on February 14, leading to the death of one person. The incident delayed several supporting works that were required before safety inspections and trial-related procedures could move ahead.

According to the report, the setback impacted the project schedule by nearly two months. With the monsoon season also expected to slow down construction activity, November 2026 is now being seen as the likely target for the start of limited metro services on this route.

Mumbai Metro Line 4 And 4A Work Nearing Completion

The corridor was earlier expected to become operational in phases during early 2026. During a trial run flagged off last year by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, authorities had indicated that services would first begin between Gaimukh and Vijay Garden. The route was then expected to be extended up to Cadbury Junction.

However, the revised plan now appears to focus on completing the Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction stretch in one partial operational phase, subject to safety approvals and final readiness.

MMRDA Focuses On Safety Clearances Before Passenger Operations

An MMRDA official told TOI that the authority is currently prioritising the completion of pending work along the corridor. The official added that passenger services will begin only after all mandatory safety approvals are obtained.

The report also mentioned that the Mogharpada car shed is unlikely to be ready before the start of services. However, temporary arrangements are being planned for the maintenance of metro trains that will operate on this stretch.

Idle Metro Rakes On Ghodbunder Road Add To Commuter Frustration

Several metro rakes brought in for trial runs are still stationed on the elevated tracks along Ghodbunder Road. For daily commuters, the sight of idle trains has added to the frustration, especially as traffic congestion remains a major issue on one of Thane’s busiest routes.

Residents say that even a limited opening of the corridor could bring major relief, especially for those travelling between Kasarvadavli and Cadbury Junction. During peak hours, road travel on this stretch often becomes time-consuming due to heavy traffic.

Thane Commuters Await Final Opening Date For Metro Services

While occasional test movements of metro trains are visible on the corridor, many residents say there is still no clarity on the exact date when passenger services will begin.

For now, the Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 4 and 4A is expected to begin partial operations by November 2026, provided the remaining construction work, trial procedures and safety approvals are completed on time.
