Thane Sets New Benchmark: Transgender-Friendly Toilets & Green Energy Projects Drive Inclusive, Sustainable Growth

Thane: In a progressive step towards inclusive urban development and environmental sustainability, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at improving public infrastructure and strengthening waste management systems across the city.

Transgender-Friendly Facilities To Boost Inclusivity

As part of its inclusivity push, TMC has announced the construction of dedicated toilet facilities for the transgender community at four key locations across Thane. Each facility will include two stalls, bringing the total to eight units designed to ensure safe, dignified, and accessible sanitation.

This move is expected to address a long-standing gap in urban infrastructure, promoting equality and better public access for marginalized communities.

Major Waste Processing Plant At Atkoli

On the sustainability front, TMC is setting up a large-scale solid waste processing plant at Atkoli with a capacity to handle 600–800 tonnes of waste daily.

A key highlight of this project is the introduction of a Green Charcoal initiative, which aims to convert waste into a cleaner, alternative energy source—marking a significant shift toward resource recovery and reduced landfill dependency.

Waste-To-Wealth Push With Fertilizer Plant

Further strengthening its waste-to-wealth strategy, a new composting facility will be established at Gaimukh. The plant will process organic waste into fertilizer, supporting sustainable waste disposal while contributing to agricultural use.

PPP Model To Expand Public Infrastructure

In addition to these projects, TMC plans to develop 13 more public toilets under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, enhancing sanitation infrastructure across the city.

Five-Year Vision For Sustainable Thane

These initiatives are part of a broader five-year review focused on achieving 100% scientific waste segregation and disposal. By combining inclusivity with environmental responsibility, Thane is positioning itself as a model for modern urban governance.
