Thane Railway Station Adds Extra Reservation Counters Before Ganesh Festival Rush to Konkan

New Booking Windows Aim to Reduce Long Queues as Advance Train Reservations Begin

Thousands of passengers traveling from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to the Konkan region for the Gauri-Ganpati festival received welcome relief as Central Railway opened additional reservation counters at Thane Railway Station. The move comes at the start of the peak advance booking period, when demand for Konkan-bound train tickets reaches its highest level every year.

With Ganeshotsav 2026 beginning on September 14, millions of people across Maharashtra are preparing to travel to their hometowns, making this one of the busiest travel seasons for Indian Railways.

Extra Reservation Counters Open at Thane Railway Station

To handle the heavy festive rush, railway authorities have started operating two additional reservation counters at Thane Railway Station. The new counters are located near the station's post office and became operational from July 11, 2026, the first day of the advance reservation window.

Indian Railways currently allows passengers to reserve tickets 60 days before the journey, making the period from July 11 to July 30 one of the busiest booking phases for Konkan-bound trains.

Every year, reservation centers witness long queues as families, office workers, students, and professionals from Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and neighboring cities rush to secure confirmed tickets for the festival season. The new counters are expected to reduce waiting time and improve the booking experience for passengers.

Ganesh Festival Triggers Massive Konkan Travel Every Year

Ganeshotsav is among Maharashtra's most celebrated festivals and creates one of the country's biggest seasonal migration movements.

Lakhs of people living in Mumbai, Thane, and across the MMR travel to their native villages in districts such as Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Raigad to celebrate the festival with their families. As a result, trains operating on the Konkan Railway route witness exceptionally high demand, with reservations filling up within hours of bookings opening.

Railway authorities regularly introduce crowd management measures and additional services during this period to manage passenger demand.

MP Naresh Mhaske Raises Commuter Concerns

The decision to increase booking facilities followed requests made by Thane Member of Parliament Naresh Mhaske, who highlighted the difficulties faced by passengers during the festive booking season.

He submitted representations to senior railway officials, including the Central Railway administration in Mumbai, the General Manager, and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeking immediate action to improve ticket reservation services.

One of his primary demands was the opening of at least two additional booking counters at Thane Railway Station to reduce overcrowding during the advance reservation period.

Responding to the request, railway authorities quickly arranged the new reservation windows, which were inaugurated by the MP on the first day of operations.

Demand for Better Konkan Railway Services Continues

Apart from requesting additional booking counters, MP Mhaske also urged the Railway Ministry to strengthen rail connectivity for Konkan-bound passengers through several long-term proposals.

The key demands include:

  • Introduction of a dedicated Thane–Sawantwadi Special Train during the festive season, proposed to be named the Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Express.
  • Additional halts for long-distance trains at Sawantwadi to improve passenger convenience.
  • Faster completion of pending infrastructure work at Sawantwadi Terminus to support future passenger growth.

These proposals are aimed at improving railway connectivity and handling the increasing number of travelers heading to the Konkan region during major festivals.

Passengers Welcome the Move

The opening of the new reservation counters received a positive response from passengers on the very first day of advance ticket booking. Many travelers reported smoother booking procedures and shorter queues compared to previous years.

With the festive travel season expected to witness another record rush, the additional counters are likely to play an important role in making the reservation process faster and more convenient for thousands of Konkan-bound passengers.

Railway officials are also expected to continue monitoring passenger demand over the coming weeks as advance bookings for Ganeshotsav 2026 remain at their peak.
