Dussehra 2025: Navi Mumbai Tightens Security Ahead of Durga Idol Immersion
Navi Mumbai, October 1: As Dussehra celebrations culminate with the immersion of Durga idols on October 2, Navi Mumbai Police have rolled out one of their most extensive security deployments in recent years. With thousands of devotees expected to participate in the immersions, authorities have taken proactive measures to ensure that the rituals are conducted smoothly and safely.
Officials estimate that more than 3,200 idols will be immersed across the city, with arrangements made at over 800 public sites and 2,400 private or household locations. Given the scale of participation, police have mapped out each zone in detail, with Zone 1 hosting 249 immersions, Zone 2 handling 236, and Zone 3 preparing for 339.
Heavy Security Deployment
The Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate has mobilized a large contingent of personnel to maintain order. The deployment includes 7 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 11 Assistant Commissioners, 72 Inspectors, 270 Sub-Inspectors, and nearly 2,200 constables. To strengthen the ground force, additional support has been called in, comprising nine striking force units, two Quick Response Teams, two reserve police platoons, and several Home Guard units.
Authorities have also factored in the risk of emergencies. Bomb detection and disposal squads have been stationed at key routes and major ghats, while sensitive pockets of the city will see heightened patrols and checkpoints. This layered approach is expected to provide both preventive security and swift response capability in case of any incidents.
Tech-Driven Vigilance
Beyond manpower, technology is playing a major role in monitoring the immersion processions. The police have installed CCTV cameras at all major ghats, while additional cameras have been placed by civic authorities and local police stations. This network will feed into the city’s central monitoring system, allowing officers to track crowd movement, traffic flow, and potential security concerns in real time.
Officials confirmed that drones may also be deployed in particularly crowded areas to provide aerial surveillance and ensure that gatherings remain under control.
Civic and Community Participation
While security remains the primary focus, the Navi Mumbai civic body has also worked in tandem with police to streamline arrangements. Barricades, traffic diversions, and medical aid booths have been set up at multiple immersion points. Volunteer groups and community organizations are expected to assist in crowd management, helping devotees navigate through immersion queues and ensuring orderly participation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Yogesh Gavde emphasized the collaborative nature of the preparations. “We have made comprehensive arrangements at all immersion points across Navi Mumbai to ensure a peaceful celebration. We urge devotees to carry out rituals with patience and cooperate with police personnel on duty,” he said.
Public Advisory
As part of the safety plan, the police have appealed to citizens to avoid spreading or believing in rumours and to promptly report any suspicious activity. A dedicated helpline has been activated for quick communication, and patrol teams will be equipped with loudspeakers to make real-time announcements if needed.
Authorities have also requested that citizens respect traffic advisories, as processions are likely to slow down movement on arterial roads. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire brigades, will remain stationed near crowded immersion sites for rapid deployment.
A Peaceful Celebration Expected
Durga idol immersion, which marks the conclusion of Navratri and Dussehra festivities, traditionally draws large crowds in Navi Mumbai. With cultural performances, processions, and devotional songs filling the air, the event blends spirituality with community bonding. However, the scale of the celebration often creates challenges for law enforcement, particularly in managing traffic, crowd surges, and public safety.
This year, with over 3,000 idols and thousands of participants, the festival is among the largest in recent memory. By combining heavy deployment, modern surveillance, and community cooperation, Navi Mumbai Police hope to set an example of safe and harmonious celebrations.
As ACP Gavde noted, “Festivals are a time of joy and unity. We appeal to citizens to maintain discipline and help us ensure that the immersion ceremonies conclude peacefully. Together, we can make this Dussehra memorable for all the right reasons.”
With preparations now complete, Navi Mumbai is set to witness a grand yet orderly farewell to Goddess Durga, reaffirming the city’s spirit of devotion and collective responsibility.
