Faster Mumbai-Pune Drive Coming Soon: Missing Link to Open by End of 2025

In a significant infrastructure development for Maharashtra, the long-awaited “missing link” project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is now scheduled for completion by December 2025. This transformative project, which aims to enhance one of India’s busiest expressways, is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 25 minutes and shorten the overall distance by 13.3 kilometers. Once completed, it will not only ease congestion but also make the journey faster, safer, and more fuel-efficient for millions of daily commuters and travelers.

The missing link is being developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and represents a major feat of modern engineering. The new alignment includes a combination of viaducts, tunnels, and bridges designed to bypass the most difficult and time-consuming stretch of the current expressway. Among its key features are an 840-meter viaduct, a 1.75-kilometer tunnel, and a spectacular 650-meter-long cable-stayed bridge that will soar above the scenic Tiger Valley in the Lonavala-Khandala stretch. Additionally, the route includes an 8.9-kilometer tunnel that travels as deep as 170 feet beneath Lonavala Lake, offering a more direct and smoother route between the two cities.

What makes this project particularly notable is the engineering ambition and scale. The centerpiece — a 45-storey-high cable-stayed bridge — will not only be one of the tallest structures in the region but also a key visual and functional highlight of the expressway upgrade. With the new alignment allowing for driving speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, the expressway promises a significantly improved experience with fewer sharp bends, lower gradients, and reduced accident-prone zones.

Despite its many benefits, the project has experienced multiple delays over the years. Initially slated for a March 2024 launch, the deadline was later extended to January, then March, June, and eventually August 2025. However, recent updates from MSRDC officials suggest that progress has accelerated, and the agency is now targeting December 2025 as the final handover date. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has underlined the strategic importance of the project, noting its potential to ease traffic bottlenecks, lower fuel consumption, and improve travel efficiency along this critical corridor.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway serves as a vital link not only for daily commuters but also for freight movement, tourism, and long-distance travel. Once the missing link is operational, travel between the two cities is expected to be more seamless, with reduced stress for drivers and shorter commute times. This, in turn, could also lead to a boost in tourism for scenic spots like Lonavala and Khandala, especially during the monsoon season when the region draws thousands of visitors.

With a total estimated cost of ₹6,600 crore, the missing link project stands as one of India’s most ambitious expressway upgrades. It exemplifies how thoughtful infrastructure planning and engineering can solve real-world traffic and transportation challenges. While the initial delays may have tested public patience, the current momentum signals a strong finish by the end of 2025.
