Mumbai’s BKC Bullet Train Station to Integrate with Metro Lines 3 and 2B for Seamless Connectivity

Mumbai’s BKC Bullet Train Station to Integrate with Metro Lines 3 and 2B for Seamless Connectivity

Mumbai, July 3, 2025 — In a significant boost to Mumbai’s public transport ecosystem, India’s first underground bullet train station, located at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), will soon be directly connected to two major metro lines — Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) and Metro Line 2B — through a series of underground and elevated linkages.

The move is part of an ambitious multi-modal integration (MMI) strategy designed to ensure smooth transitions between the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridor and the city’s metro network and commercial zones. Authorities hope this initiative will create a truly interconnected urban transit experience for Mumbai commuters.

Underground Tunnel to Metro Line 3

According to officials from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), a 1.1-km long underground tunnel will connect the bullet train station to Kotak-BKC station on the Aqua Line (Metro Line-3), which runs from Cuffe Parade to Aarey Colony. This tunnel will include a travelator for easier passenger movement and is inspired by subway designs seen at Churchgate and CSMT.

“The location for the tunnel has already been identified,” said an NHSRCL official. “We are planning four connecting outlets to link the bullet train station with nearby hubs and buildings. Detailed costs and execution responsibilities will be worked out in the coming months.”

Preliminary cost estimates suggest that the tunnel may cost between ₹100 crore and ₹150 crore, depending on the final engineering blueprint and design complexities.

Foot Overbridge to Metro Line 2B

The topmost level of the Mumbai HSR station will feature a foot overbridge (FOB) that will provide a direct connection to the under-construction Metro Line-2B, specifically the IL&FS station. This station lies just 50 meters away, along the main BKC road, making it an ideal candidate for pedestrian integration.

BKC Bullet Train Station: A Mega Infrastructure Project

Spread over 5 acres and estimated to cost over ₹3,600 crore, the Mumbai HSR station is set to be a technological and architectural marvel. Slated for completion by late 2027, the station will have three underground levels:

Platform Level (30m–35m deep): Will house the bullet train platforms.

Concourse Level: Will feature ticket counters, driver rooms, passenger gates, and the entrance to the Metro-3 tunnel.

Ground Level: Will be a commercial plaza with retail shops, restaurants, and public spaces.

Officials also confirmed that excavation work is currently ongoing, with soil being transported to Bhiwandi for disposal.

Private Commercial Connectivity on the Horizon

In a noteworthy development, prominent commercial stakeholders such as the Bharat Diamond Bourse have approached NHSRCL for direct access to the station. Proposals include bridges or subways connecting the HSR station to commercial buildings — a move that could benefit thousands of commuters, especially diamond traders commuting from Surat and other parts of Gujarat.

MMI: Paving the Way for Smart Urban Travel

The integration project is being coordinated jointly by NHSRCL, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). The goal is to provide Mumbai residents and business travelers a seamless travel experience, reducing the reliance on road transport and enabling faster, eco-friendly movement across the city and beyond.

Officials say that this multi-modal integration will not only increase ridership across different modes of transport but also transform the BKC area into a transit-oriented development (TOD) zone, boosting real estate value and commercial growth.

Conclusion

The bullet train project, once seen as a distant dream, is fast becoming a key pillar in Mumbai’s futuristic transport vision. By connecting with multiple metro lines and enabling direct access to business districts, the BKC High-Speed Rail station is on track to redefine urban mobility and regional connectivity in India’s financial capital.

As the city races toward its 2027 deadline, Mumbai residents can look forward to a future where trains, metros, and commercial centers are not isolated silos, but part of a seamless, smart urban journey.
