Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover Extension To Open On June 6, Set To Ease Traffic Between Goregaon & Ram Mandir On Western Express Highway

Mumbai’s long-awaited Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover extension is finally set to open for traffic on Saturday, June 6, bringing relief to thousands of motorists travelling between Ram Mandir and Goregaon. The 750-metre, four-lane extension is expected to improve east-west connectivity in the western suburbs and reduce congestion around one of the busiest traffic corridors near the Western Express Highway.

750-Metre Flyover Extension To Improve Goregaon-Ram Mandir Connectivity

The new extension will create a direct road link between Ram Mandir and Goregaon, helping commuters move more smoothly across the western suburbs. While the main span of the Mrinal Tai Gore Railway Flyover has been in use since 2016, the approach arms on both sides remained incomplete for years.

Each approach arm is around 390 metres long, making the extension an important missing link for motorists who regularly face bottlenecks in the area. Once opened, the flyover is expected to support faster movement towards Goregaon, Ram Mandir, Oshiwara and nearby parts of the Western Express Highway corridor.

Project Began In 2019 After Approval In 2018

The extension project received administrative approval in 2018, and construction began in March 2019. The work was awarded to the MEPL-Gyan joint venture. Along with the road structure, the project also includes pedestrian facilities, safety infrastructure, painting work and noise barriers.

The project was originally expected to be completed within 24 months. However, the timeline was pushed back due to several hurdles, including pandemic-related delays and technical challenges during construction.

Project Cost Rose To Around Rs 248 Crore

The cost of the flyover extension has also seen a significant rise over the years. The project, initially estimated at around Rs 209 crore, was later revised to Rs 240 crore in 2023. Additional technical works during construction further increased the final cost to nearly Rs 248 crore.

Earlier reports had also flagged the cost escalation and delay, noting that the project had remained incomplete for several years despite being a key infrastructure link for the area.

BMC Faced Questions Over Delay And Cost Escalation

The prolonged construction period led to criticism from civic representatives and local commuters. In recent weeks, questions were raised over repeated delays, planning issues and the rising expenditure on the project.

The delay also caused inconvenience to residents and daily commuters, as construction activity affected traffic movement around Goregaon and Ram Mandir. After the contractor missed the revised April 30 deadline, the BMC reportedly imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 per day from May 1. The penalty was later increased to Rs 1 lakh per day from May 12 as the delay continued.

Flyover Expected To Ease Traffic On Western Express Highway Corridor

With the extension now ready to open, the civic body expects smoother traffic movement in and around Goregaon. The new link is likely to reduce pressure on local roads and improve access between the eastern and western sides of the suburb.

For commuters using the Western Express Highway, Ram Mandir, Goregaon, Oshiwara and nearby areas, the flyover extension is expected to cut travel delays and offer a more direct route through the western suburbs.

The opening on June 6 marks the completion of a long-delayed infrastructure project that has remained under public watch for years.
