Maharashtra Launches Redevelopment of Air India Building at Nariman Point
The Maharashtra government has started the process of converting the iconic Air India Building at Nariman Point into a modern government administrative hub.
Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale inspected the building on Wednesday and directed officials to ensure that safety, quality and citizen convenience remain the main focus during the renovation work.
Structural Audit to be Conducted Before Renovation
During the inspection, Bhosale instructed officials to carry out a detailed structural audit of the building before shifting any government offices there.
He said that repair work should be completed first and interior development should begin only after the building is found structurally safe. The minister made it clear that there should be no compromise on construction quality at any stage.
Focus On Safety, Quality And Durable Materials
Bhosale asked officials to use strong and long-lasting materials for the renovation. He also directed them to upgrade important systems such as electrical fittings, technical infrastructure and other facilities needed for a modern office complex.
The minister said the project should not just focus on giving the building a new look, but also on making it safe, efficient and convenient for daily government work.
Heritage-Style Facade and Improved Entrance Planned
The government also plans to redesign and beautify the building’s entrance and facade. Bhosale suggested that the new design should reflect Maharashtra’s heritage, identity and stature.
He also asked officials to consult leading architects and expert institutions to ensure that the building keeps its landmark value while getting modern facilities.
Citizen Convenience to Remain Top Priority
The minister stressed that the building will serve many citizens once government offices start functioning from there. Because of this, accessibility, safety, public movement and basic facilities must be planned properly.
He directed officials to complete the renovation work within the planned timeline while maintaining high standards.
Air India Building Acquired For ₹1,601 Crore
The Air India Building was officially transferred to the Maharashtra government on June 2 after the state acquired it from Air India Assets Holding Limited for ₹1,601 crore. The acquisition had received Cabinet approval in September 2023.
The building is one of Mumbai’s most well-known commercial landmarks and holds a prime location in South Mumbai’s Nariman Point area.
Multiple Government Departments to Shift After Repairs
Once the renovation is completed, the building is expected to house several government departments. This will help bring offices together under one roof and improve administrative coordination.
The move is also expected to provide better office infrastructure and make government services more organized for citizens.
Bhosale said the transfer of the Air India Building is an important step in strengthening Maharashtra’s administrative infrastructure. He added that the government will develop it as a model administrative complex with focus on quality, sustainability and public convenience.
The Maharashtra government formally acquired/took possession of the building for ₹1,601 crore, with the handover reported on June 2–3, 2026.
