BMC Plans ₹15.30 Crore Upgrade With 15 Modern Public Toilet Blocks Across Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to invest ₹15.30 crore to build 15 modern public toilet blocks across Mumbai’s western suburbs. The project is aimed at improving sanitation, cleanliness, safety, and convenience for residents, commuters, tourists, and other visitors.

15 Modern Public Toilets Planned Across Western Mumbai

The BMC has invited tenders for the construction of 15 state-of-the-art public toilet facilities. The civic body has set a target of completing the project within 18 months, including the monsoon period.

The new facilities will be designed to provide a cleaner and more comfortable experience for people using public spaces. The project will focus on better hygiene, accessibility, water conservation, and regular maintenance.

Separate Facilities and Better Accessibility

The proposed toilet blocks will have separate sections for men and women. They will also include facilities for persons with disabilities and transgender users.

To reduce water consumption, the toilets will use water-saving fixtures. Sanitary napkin vending machines will also be installed to improve access to essential hygiene products.

Solar panels and overhead water storage systems are among the other planned features. Dedicated maintenance areas will help support the upkeep of these facilities.

CCTV and Safety Features Included

Safety will be another important part of the new public toilet project. CCTV cameras will be installed at entrances to improve monitoring and security.

The modern design is expected to provide users with better lighting, cleanliness, accessibility, and overall comfort. These features are particularly important at busy locations that see large numbers of daily visitors.

Key Locations Across Western Suburbs

The planned facilities will be located at several busy public areas across Mumbai’s western suburbs. One proposed location is near Anandwan Police Chowky in Vakola, while another is near the National Park flyover on the Western Express Highway in Borivali.

Public toilets are also planned around popular destinations such as Juhu, Versova, and Aksa beaches. Facilities near Andheri railway station will serve daily commuters and travelers.

Other areas included in the broader plan are Goregaon, Malad, Borivali, and other high-footfall locations.

Part of Mumbai’s Swachh Bharat Mission Efforts

The project is part of the BMC’s wider effort to improve public sanitation under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.

Mumbai currently has 787 pay-and-use public toilets. Seven facilities in the island city have already been upgraded to aspirational standards. These facilities were previously referred to as VIP toilets.

The latest project aims to extend similar modern sanitation standards to more locations in the western suburbs.

New Pay-and-Use Policy to Improve Maintenance

The BMC has also been working on changes to its public toilet management system. In May, the civic body gave existing toilet operators a three-month deadline to upgrade their facilities.

A new Pay-and-Use Toilet Policy has also been proposed to create common standards for facilities, improve maintenance, and bring greater transparency to the selection of operators.

With the proposed ₹15.30 crore investment, the BMC is looking to create cleaner, safer, and more accessible public toilet facilities at some of Mumbai’s busiest locations.
