BMC Launches ‘Hello A Ward’ AI WhatsApp Assistant For Civic Complaints In South Mumbai

BMC Introduces ‘Hello A Ward’ AI WhatsApp Service To Simplify Civic Complaints In South Mumbai

The new AI-enabled WhatsApp service allows residents to report civic problems, receive complaint reference numbers and monitor progress on issues such as waste collection, water supply, road maintenance and faulty streetlights.

Mumbai, October 9, 2026: Residents in South Mumbai can now report local civic issues and follow up on complaints through WhatsApp following the launch of ‘Hello A Ward’, an artificial intelligence-powered grievance redressal service. The initiative was launched by Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, with local BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar spearheading the effort to make civic services more accessible to citizens.

The platform aims to simplify the process of reporting neighbourhood problems by allowing residents to submit complaints through a familiar messaging application instead of relying on separate mobile applications or lengthy offline procedures.

AI-Powered WhatsApp Platform For Civic Grievances

The service is designed for residents across South Mumbai areas, including Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Fort. Through the WhatsApp assistant, citizens can report everyday municipal issues, including uncollected garbage, interruptions in water supply, damaged roads and non-functional streetlights.

However, the platform does not cover disputes arising within private residential buildings, as its primary focus is on civic matters handled by municipal authorities.

According to Narwekar, the AI assistant collects essential information from complainants, including a description of the problem, relevant photographs and the location of the issue. It then identifies the appropriate civic department or official responsible for addressing the complaint.

Once the submitted details are confirmed, the system generates a unique complaint reference number along with a summary, enabling residents to keep track of their requests.

Residents Can Monitor Complaint Status Through WhatsApp

A key feature of ‘Hello A Ward’ is its complaint-tracking facility, which allows users to monitor the progress of their grievances without repeatedly contacting civic officials or visiting municipal offices.

The system provides updates at different stages of the process, including complaint registration, assignment to the relevant department, commencement of work and resolution.

Residents can also receive before-and-after photographs through WhatsApp, offering a visual record of the action taken to address reported problems.

The initiative is intended to improve communication between citizens and municipal authorities while making the grievance process more transparent and convenient. By bringing complaint registration and status updates onto WhatsApp, the BMC’s A Ward initiative seeks to make reporting local civic problems easier for South Mumbai residents.
