Mumbai Pod Taxi Project Crosses 100 Piling Mark, Elevated Corridor To Link Kurla, Bandra And BKC

Mumbai’s ambitious pod taxi project has crossed the 100-piling milestone, signaling steady progress on the city’s planned 8.85-kilometer elevated Automated Rapid Transit System. The project is expected to create a new and convenient travel option connecting Kurla, Bandra and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).

The driverless pod taxi system will use battery-powered vehicles running on a dedicated elevated corridor. The project is being developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, meaning the state government and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will not have to bear the project cost. The system is also expected to create a revenue stream for the authority.

MMRDA Sees Pod Taxis As A New Public Transport Option

MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee recently highlighted pod taxis as part of Mumbai’s plans to expand its public transportation network.

He said the city is looking at modern rapid transport solutions that can provide affordable and efficient travel on selected routes. The goal is to give commuters more choices and improve connections between different forms of public transportation.

The pod taxi system is expected to support Mumbai’s growing transport network by providing another option for daily commuters.

First Phase Of Mumbai Pod Taxi Route To Have Eight Stations

The first phase of the project will cover around 3.36 kilometers between Kurla and Bandra and is planned to include eight stations.

Across the complete 8.85-kilometer corridor, the system is expected to have 22 air-conditioned stations. The route is mainly designed to improve first-mile and last-mile connectivity between Kurla and Bandra railway stations, BKC and nearby metro services.

This could make daily travel easier for commuters moving between railway stations, offices and metro corridors in the area.

Pod Taxi To Connect With Metro Lines 3 And 2B

A major feature of the project is its planned integration with Mumbai’s metro network. The pod taxi corridor is expected to connect with Metro Line 3 at BKC and Metro Line 2B at the ITO and IL&FS stations.

These connections could give passengers more options when changing between different public transport systems, helping create a more connected network across the city.

Driverless Battery-Powered Pods To Carry Six Passengers

The proposed pods will be fully driverless and powered by batteries. They will run on a dedicated elevated guideway and are planned to reach speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour.

Each pod will have space for up to six passengers. The system is designed to operate at intervals of about 15 seconds, allowing frequent services during operating hours.

Another key feature is the ability of pods to travel directly toward a passenger’s selected destination without stopping at every station. This could help reduce unnecessary stops and make some journeys faster.

Mumbai Pod Taxi Project May Serve Over 1 Lakh Passengers Daily

The project is projected to handle around 1.09 lakh passengers each day by 2031 as demand for public transportation continues to grow.

The proposed fare has been estimated at Rs. 21 per kilometer based on 2022 rates. With its elevated route, driverless technology and connections to major railway and metro stations, the pod taxi project is being planned as an additional mobility option for Mumbai’s busy transport network.

The completion of more than 100 piling works marks an important construction milestone as work moves ahead on the proposed corridor connecting Kurla, Bandra and BKC.
